## What is a Corrective Leg?

A corrective leg is the counter-directional segment of market structure: after an [impulse leg](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/impulse-leg/) expands with the trend, the corrective leg is the slower, overlapping move that retraces part of it. Its signature is inefficiency: smaller bodies, heavy bar-to-bar overlap, and drifting channel or sideways shapes rather than one-way travel. In a healthy trend the correction stays inside the prior impulse's territory and ends before taking out the swing point that impulse established.

Corrections are where trends reload. Trend traders treat the corrective leg as the entry window, the same event [pullback](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/pullback/) trading is organized around, estimating where it might terminate from retracement levels, prior break points, and higher-timeframe zones. ## How to identify a corrective leg

1. Anchor on the prior impulse: the directional leg whose retracement is being classified.
2. Check the travel character: smaller bodies, constant bar overlap, and drift rather than one-way delivery mark the corrective signature.
3. Measure the depth: corrections that hold in the shallow half of the impulse, and above its origin, keep the trend structure intact.
4. Read the internal grammar: minor swings in both directions inside the leg, versus the impulse's uninterrupted sequence, confirm the classification at one degree lower.
5. Hold the label provisionally: momentum returning in the trend direction ends the correction, while impulsive expansion against the trend and a broken swing force the reversal relabel.

## How traders use it

## FAQ

### Is a corrective leg the same as a pullback?

Mostly. 'Pullback' is the trading name for the counter-trend move you buy or sell into; 'corrective leg' is the structural name for the same segment when mapping swings. Corrective leg is also the broader term: it covers any overlapping, low-momentum leg, including moves inside ranges where 'pullback' would not naturally apply.

### How does a corrective leg relate to an Elliott corrective wave?

Elliott corrective waves come with a formal grammar: zigzags, flats, triangles, and combinations, each with its own rules and typical ratios. A corrective leg in general structure analysis is simply the observed counter-move between impulses, with no required internal form. The Elliott term is a special, rule-bound case of the general one.

### How deep can a correction go before it becomes a reversal?

Structurally, the line is the prior swing point and ultimately the impulse's origin: while those hold, the counter-move remains a correction by definition, however uncomfortable. Depth heuristics, the shallow third-to-half being healthiest, grade probability rather than identity. What actually forces the relabel is behavior plus structure: impulsive counter-trend expansion breaking the swing that should have held converts the label regardless of percentages.

### Why do corrections take so long relative to their size?

Because they are markets disagreeing rather than agreeing.
