## What is a Momentum Thrust?

A momentum thrust is a fast, outsized expansion of directional momentum read as the start of a move rather than its end. On the chart it shows as one to a few wide-range bars closing near their extremes, often erupting from a quiet consolidation on expanding volume; in an oscillator pane it is a near-vertical swing that carries straight through the midline into the upper or lower zone.

Thrust logic inverts the reflexive [overbought](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/overbought-oversold/) fade: an extreme reached quickly and early, especially from a flat base, is treated as evidence of initiative strength likely to carry, the same reading formalized in the stochastic pop. The hard part is separating an initiation thrust from an exhaustion spike, and the honest answer is that the bar action alone rarely settles it; position within the larger move does most of the work.

The idea has both a stock-picking and a market-breadth lineage. ## How traders use it

- For continuation entries: treating the first strong close beyond a base as a go-with signal, entered with the thrust or on the first shallow pause, rather than waiting for a pullback that strong moves often refuse to give.
- In scanners: thrust criteria (range expansion, close location near the extreme, elevated volume) shortlist candidates at the start of short multi-day swings.
- As a caution flag in reverse: the same signature appearing late in an extended run reads as possible exhaustion, so thrust systems usually gate entries by trend position and base quality.
