Volume Profile
Mar 25, 2026

The Volume Profile tool provides a clean and efficient visualization of price-volume distribution to identify key institutional interest levels such as the Point of Control (POC) and Value Area.
Usage
The Volume Profile is used to identify price levels where the most significant trading activity has occurred over a specific lookback period. Traders use these levels to gauge market sentiment and identify potential support or resistance zones.
- Point of Control (POC): This is the price level with the highest traded volume. It often acts as a "magnet" for price or a significant pivot point.
- Value Area (VA): This range represents where a specified percentage (defaulting to 70%) of the total volume was traded.
- Value Area High (VAH): The upper boundary of the Value Area, often acting as resistance in a ranging market.
- Value Area Low (VAL): The lower boundary of the Value Area, often acting as support in a ranging market.
Example: If price is trading above the Value Area, the market may be perceived as "expensive" or bullishly trending. Conversely, trading below the Value Area may indicate the market is "cheap" or bearishly trending. Rejections from the VAH or VAL can signal entries for mean-reversion trades toward the POC.
Details
The indicator calculates volume distribution by dividing the price range (from the highest high to the lowest low over the lookback period) into a user-defined number of horizontal "buckets" or rows.
- Volume Accumulation: For every bar within the lookback window, the script assigns the bar's volume to the price bucket corresponding to its midpoint.
- POC Identification: The bucket containing the highest accumulated volume is designated as the Point of Control.
- Value Area Expansion: Starting from the POC, the script iteratively adds volume from adjacent upper and lower buckets until the total reached meets the defined Value Area percentage (typically 70%).
- Visual Representation: The histogram displays relative volume intensity. The POC is highlighted with a distinct color, while the buckets within the Value Area are shaded differently than those outside of it to provide immediate visual context.
Settings
- Lookback Bars: Determines the number of recent bars used to calculate the volume profile.
- Profile Rows: Sets the number of horizontal price buckets; higher values provide more granularity, while lower values offer a broader view.
- Value Area %: Defines the percentage of total volume to be included within the Value Area (default is 0.70 or 70%).
- Bar Width (0-1): Adjusts the horizontal width of the volume histogram on the chart.
- POC Color: Sets the color for the Point of Control line and its corresponding histogram bar.
- Value Area Color: Sets the color for the histogram bars falling within the Value Area.
- Outside VA Color: Sets the color for histogram bars falling outside the Value Area.
- Show Labels: Toggles the visibility of price labels for the POC, VAH, and VAL.
FAQ
How does the "Lookback Bars" setting affect the profile? The Lookback Bars setting determines the data sample. A shorter lookback focuses on recent intraday or short-term volume shifts, while a longer lookback identifies long-term structural levels that may have higher historical significance.
What is the significance of the 70% Value Area? The 70% Value Area is a standard convention in volume profile and TPO (Time Price Opportunity) analysis, representing approximately one standard deviation of volume distribution, which traders use to define "fair value."
How do I access Volume Profile? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
