The Golden Cross, SMA 200 Moving Average Strategy indicator provides an automated framework for identifying long-term trend reversals and momentum shifts using the classic intersection of two simple moving averages.

Usage

The strategy is designed for long-only trend following. It initiates a "long" position when the faster SMA (default 50 periods) crosses above the slower SMA (default 200 periods), a signal commonly known as the "Golden Cross." The position remains open until the faster SMA crosses back below the slower SMA, which is often referred to as a "Death Cross."

Users can utilize the visual bar coloring feature to identify the current market state:

  • Green Bars: Occur when the price is above both moving averages and the slow moving average is sloping upward, indicating a strong bullish trend.
  • Red Bars: Occur when the price is below both moving averages and the slow moving average is sloping downward, indicating a strong bearish trend.
  • Neutral Bars: Occur when the trend conditions are mixed or transitioning.

Details

The script implements a simple moving average (SMA) logic to filter out short-term market noise and focus on macro-level price movements. Historically, the Golden Cross has been used by institutional and retail traders to confirm major shifts in market sentiment, particularly on daily charts for indices like the S&P 500 or Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The strategy does not include complex money management features such as fixed stop losses or take profit targets, relying instead on the moving average crossover to dictate both entry and exit points. The visual output includes the option to plot both the fast and slow moving averages, with the line colors dynamically changing based on their current slope (green for ascending, red for descending).
