The RedK Volume-Accelerated Directional Energy Ratio (RedK VADER) indicator integrates price displacement and volume effort to estimate the underlying buying and selling energy driving market movements. By combining these elements, the tool provides a clearer view of market conviction, helping traders distinguish between high-conviction trends and low-energy price fluctuations.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market dynamics through its three primary components:

  • Net Energy (VADER Line): This is the thick main line that changes color between green and red. A crossover above the zero line suggests buyers are in control (Net Positive Energy), while a crossunder below zero suggests sellers are in control (Net Negative Energy).
  • Demand vs. Supply Energy: The blue line with crosses represents Demand (Positive Energy), and the orange line with circles represents Supply (Negative Energy). Observing these lines individually allows traders to see if a trend is being driven by increasing aggressive buying or decreasing selling pressure.
  • Sentiment Histogram: When enabled, this feature provides a broader view of market energy over a longer period, acting as a baseline for the faster signal line.

Traders should look for the VADER line crossing zero as a primary signal for directional bias. However, because volume heavily influences the calculation, it is recommended to use VADER as a secondary confirmation tool alongside trend-following indicators like Moving Averages or momentum oscillators like the RSI.

Details

The VADER indicator is built on the concept that price displacement (the result) must be validated by volume (the effort). The script calculates the ratio of price change relative to the recent range and scales it by a volume accelerator.

Key calculation concepts include:

  • Displacement/Effort Ratio: If price moves significantly on high volume, the directional energy is high. If price moves on low volume, the energy is discounted.
  • Volume Acceleration Modes: The script offers "Full" volume weighting, "Relative" weighting (which uses a stochastic-like normalization of volume to filter noise), and a "None" mode for instruments without volume data, where it functions as a price-based oscillator.
  • Normalization: The Demand and Supply components are normalized against the average volume to ensure the oscillator remains readable across different market conditions.

Settings

  • Length: Sets the primary lookback period for the Directional Energy Ratio calculation.
  • Average (DER): The length of the moving average applied to the Demand and Supply components.
  • DER MA type: Selection between WMA, EMA, or SMA for the internal energy calculations.
  • Smooth: Controls the smoothing of the final VADER signal line.
  • Sentiment (Length): A toggle and length input for a slower sentiment baseline to help identify long-term energy shifts.
  • Volume Calculation:
    • Full: Uses the standard volume associated with the bar.
    • Relative: Scales volume based on its position within a lookback range to emphasize spikes and ignore noise.
    • None: Disables volume acceleration, making the indicator purely price-based.
  • Lookback (for Relative): Specifies the window used to calculate the relative volume intensity.

FAQ

How do I interpret the individual Demand and Supply lines?
The Demand line (blue/crosses) shows the strength of buying pressure, while the Supply line (orange/circles) shows selling pressure. When these lines diverge significantly, it indicates a strong trend; when they are close together, it indicates a balanced or sideways market.

What is the difference between "Relative" and "Full" volume modes?
"Full" mode uses raw volume as a multiplier. "Relative" mode looks at volume compared to a lookback period; if volume is at a multi-day high, the multiplier is 1.0, but if volume is at a multi-day low, the multiplier is near 0, filtering out low-conviction moves.
