The Entry points indicator identifies trend-following entry opportunities based on price interactions with an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to capture momentum during market runs.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify potential market entries. The indicator plots visual labels on the chart when specific price action criteria are met relative to the EMA.

  • Initial Entry: The first signal appearing after a trend change typically represents the primary entry point for a new move.
  • Re-entries: Subsequent signals in the same direction allow traders to scale into positions or re-enter if a previous move was missed.
  • Trend Capture: The tool is designed to identify long-duration trends across various asset classes including forex, stocks, commodities, and indices.

Note that this script focuses exclusively on entry points; exit strategies should be determined through external risk management rules or secondary technical indicators.

Details

The script utilizes a single Exponential Moving Average (EMA) as a baseline for trend direction and mean reversion. A "Buy" signal is triggered when the price closes above the EMA after either piercing it from above or crossing over it from below. Conversely, a "Sell" signal is triggered when the price closes below the EMA after piercing it from below or crossing under it from above.

The default period of 100 is optimized to balance signal frequency and trend reliability across various timeframes. While the indicator aims to capture significant runs, users should be aware that period settings significantly impact performance:

  • Lower Periods: Produce more frequent signals but increase the likelihood of "whipsaws" or false entries in sideways markets.
  • Higher Periods: Offer more stable trend confirmation but may result in late entries and missed initial price movements.

Settings

The following setting is available to customize the indicator behavior:

  • Period: Determines the length of the Exponential Moving Average used for signal calculation. Increasing this value filters out market noise, while decreasing it makes the indicator more sensitive to short-term price fluctuations.

FAQ

How do I interpret the Buy and Sell labels? A "Buy" arrow indicates a bullish entry point where price has successfully closed above the EMA, while a "Sell" arrow indicates a bearish entry point where price has closed below the EMA.

What timeframes and assets work best with this tool? The indicator is designed to be versatile across all timeframes and asset classes, though the default 100-period setting is generally recommended as a starting point for most markets.

How can I access the Entry points indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
