The Trend Following with Moving Averages indicator evaluates market direction by analyzing the relationship between price and nine distinct moving averages to provide a comprehensive trend strength visualization.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This tool functions as a trend filter rather than a direct entry signal generator. When the oscillator is green (above zero), the market is considered to be in a bullish regime, suggesting a preference for long positions. Conversely, when the oscillator is red (below zero), the market is in a bearish regime, suggesting a preference for short positions.

Multi-Length Analysis

The indicator utilizes nine different lengths—historically set to Fibonacci numbers—to determine if the price is trading above or below various time horizons. A higher oscillator value indicates that the price is above more moving averages, signaling a stronger trend.

Trend Confirmation

Users can combine this indicator with momentum oscillators like the RSI or Stochastic. For example, a trader might look for bullish RSI divergences only when the Trend Following with Moving Averages indicator is green, ensuring they are trading in alignment with the broader market structure.

Details

The script calculates nine separate moving averages based on the user-defined type (EMA, SMA, RMA, WMA, or VWMA). For each moving average, the script checks if the closing price is above or below the line. A weighting system is applied to these comparisons, where longer-term moving averages have a higher mathematical impact on the final oscillator value than shorter-term ones.

To reduce noise and prevent "whipsaws" (rapid false signals), the script includes a smoothing toggle. When enabled, the indicator applies a linear regression calculation to the final direction value, resulting in a smoother visual output that focuses on sustained trend shifts rather than minor price fluctuations.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the moving average calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • Smooth?: Toggles a linear regression filter to smooth the oscillator output and reduce noise.
  • Moving Average Type: Selects the calculation method for the averages (EMA, SMA, RMA, WMA, or VWMA).
  • Lengths (1-9): Individual inputs to set the periods for the nine moving averages. By default, these use Fibonacci numbers (8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377).

FAQ

How do I interpret the oscillator crossing the zero line? A cross above zero indicates that the weighted majority of moving averages are now below the price, signaling a shift to a bullish trend. A cross below zero indicates a shift to a bearish trend.

Can I use this for scalping or long-term investing? Yes, the indicator is adaptable. By adjusting the nine length settings and the moving average type, you can tune the sensitivity to suit high-frequency scalping or long-term trend following.

How do I get access to the Trend Following with Moving Averages tool? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
