The RSI Bollinger Bands indicator combines the Relative Strength Index (RSI) with Bollinger Bands and a simple moving average to provide a comprehensive view of momentum and volatility within a single oscillator window.

Usage

The RSI Bollinger Bands tool can be used to identify potential trend reversals and overextended market conditions. When the RSI line interacts with the Bollinger Bands, it provides context beyond traditional static overbought and oversold levels.

  • Volatility-Adjusted Thresholds: Instead of relying solely on the fixed 70/30 levels, traders can look for the RSI crossing outside or back inside the Bollinger Bands. A cross back inside the upper band may suggest a bearish reversal, while a cross back inside the lower band may suggest a bullish reversal.
  • Momentum Confirmation: The included Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the RSI helps smooth the oscillator's movements, allowing users to identify the short-term trend of the momentum itself.
  • Dynamic Overbought/Oversold: The Bollinger Bands expand and contract based on the volatility of the RSI, helping to identify "exhaustion" points that adapt to recent price action.

Details

This script calculates a standard RSI and then applies Bollinger Band calculations (Basis, Upper, and Lower bands) directly to the RSI values rather than price. This implementation allows for the detection of momentum extremes relative to its own recent standard deviation. Additionally, a secondary SMA of the RSI is plotted to help filter out noise and identify momentum shifts.

Settings

  • RSI Source: Determines the price data used to calculate the RSI (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • RSI Length: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation.
  • RSI Oversold Threshold: Sets the horizontal reference line for the oversold level (default is 30).
  • RSI Overbought Threshold: Sets the horizontal reference line for the overbought level (default is 70).
  • RSI MA Length: Adjusts the period of the moving average applied to the RSI line.
  • BB Length: Sets the lookback period for the Bollinger Bands calculation applied to the RSI.
  • BB Mult: Controls the standard deviation multiplier for the width of the Bollinger Bands.

FAQ

How do I interpret the RSI crossing the Bollinger Bands?

When the RSI moves outside the Bollinger Bands, it indicates that momentum is reaching an extreme relative to its recent average. A cross back inside the bands is often used by traders as a signal that the extreme momentum is cooling off.

Can I change the sensitivity of the bands?

Yes, you can adjust the "BB Length" and "BB Mult" settings. Increasing the multiplier will make the bands wider, requiring more significant momentum swings to trigger a crossover.

How can I access RSI Bollinger Bands?
