The Trend Trading With Moving Averages indicator evaluates market momentum by analyzing the convergence of three different moving average calculations to determine trend strength and potential exhaustion.

Usage

The indicator provides visual feedback directly on the price chart by coloring candles based on the relationship between the closing price and three moving averages: the Simple Moving Average (SMA), Exponential Moving Average (EMA), and Weighted Moving Average (WMA).

  • Strong Uptrend (Green): When the closing price is simultaneously above the EMA, WMA, and SMA of the specified length, the bars are colored green. This indicates a high-conviction bullish trend.
  • Neutral/Transition (Blue): If the price is above one or two of the moving averages but not all three, the bars turn blue. This often signals a weakening trend or a potential reversal as the different moving average types begin to diverge.
  • Downtrend (Red): When the price falls below all three moving average calculations, the bars are colored red, signaling a confirmed bearish trend.

Traders can use these color shifts to identify entries during strong trends (green/red) or to exercise caution when the trend loses consensus (blue).

Details

The script is an optimized implementation of the concepts found in Steve Primo's Robbery Indicator (PET-D). It utilizes the unique mathematical weighting of three different averages—Simple, Exponential, and Weighted—all calculated using the same lookback period.

  • EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Places more weight on recent price data.
  • WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Assigns a heavier weighting to the most recent data points linearly.
  • SMA (Simple Moving Average): Provides a standard arithmetic mean of the price over the period.

By requiring the price to be on one side of all three calculations for a trend signal, the indicator filters out "noise" and ensures that momentum is consistent across different calculation methodologies.

Settings

  • Length of Moving Averages: This input determines the period used for the EMA, WMA, and SMA calculations. A shorter length increases sensitivity to recent price movements, while a longer length provides a more smoothed trend perspective.

FAQ

What does a blue candle signify?

A blue candle indicates that the price is no longer aligned across all three moving average types. This suggests that the trend is losing momentum or is in a state of transition, serving as a warning for potential reversals.

Can this indicator be used on any timeframe?

Yes, the logic applies to any timeframe. However, the "Length" setting should be adjusted to suit the specific volatility and trend characteristics of the chosen timeframe.
