The Triple Moving Average indicator provides a versatile trend-following framework by plotting up to three customizable moving averages to help traders identify momentum, support/resistance levels, and trend direction.

Usage

The Triple Moving Average tool is primarily used to determine the market trend and identify potential entry or exit points based on moving average crossovers. By default, it displays three distinct lines (Short, Mid, and Long) which can be configured as Simple Moving Averages (SMA), Exponential Moving Averages (EMA), or Weighted Moving Averages (WMA).

Trend Identification

Traders can use the alignment of the three averages to gauge trend strength. For example, a "bullish stack" occurs when the Short MA is above the Mid MA, and the Mid MA is above the Long MA. Conversely, a "bearish stack" occurs when the prices are below the lines and the short-term average is below the long-term average.

Dual or Triple Configurations

The "Toggle 3/2" setting allows users to switch between a three-line setup and a two-line setup. Removing the Long MA can simplify the chart for traders who focus on shorter-term momentum crossovers between the 50 and 100 periods.

SMA and EMA Comparison

By enabling the "Show 6" feature, the indicator plots both SMA and EMA versions of the selected lengths simultaneously. This allows for a direct comparison of how different calculation methods react to current price action, with EMAs typically responding faster to recent volatility.

Details

The script calculates three independent moving averages based on user-defined lengths. The calculation logic supports three primary types:

  • SMA (Simple Moving Average): Calculates the average price over a specific number of periods, giving equal weight to all data points.
  • EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Applies more weight to recent prices, making it more responsive to new information.
  • WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Assigns a heavier weighting to the most recent data points in a linear fashion.

The indicator also includes built-in alert conditions for crossovers between the Short and Mid moving averages, facilitating automated notifications when momentum shifts.

Settings

  • Short MA: Sets the period length for the shortest moving average (default is 50).
  • Mid MA: Sets the period length for the medium moving average (default is 100).
  • Long MA: Sets the period length for the longest moving average (default is 200).
  • Show 3 MA: A master toggle to enable or disable the primary three moving average plots.
  • Select MA: Allows the user to choose the calculation method (MA/SMA, EMA, or WMA) for the primary plots.
  • Show 6 (SMA+EMA): When enabled, it overrides the default selection and displays 3 SMA lines and 3 EMA lines simultaneously for comparison.
  • Toggle 3/2: When unchecked, the Long MA is removed from the chart, leaving only the Short and Mid averages.
