The Smart Money Breakout Channels indicator identifies accumulation and distribution ranges using volatility-normalized price movement to help traders anticipate key market breakouts. By tracking periods of compressed volatility and visualizing them as dynamic channels, the tool provides high-probability zones where "smart money" activity typically occurs before a significant move.

Usage

Apply the indicator to your chart and monitor for the appearance of a new channel. These boxes form when volatility behavior shifts into a stable range.

  • Bullish Breakout: A breakout above the upper boundary suggests upward momentum.
  • Bearish Breakout: A breakout below the lower boundary suggests downward momentum.
  • Volume Gauges: Use the internal volume bars and the side gauge to assess pressure imbalances. If volume delta is heavily building in one direction within the box, it can often precede the eventual breakout direction.
  • Strong Closes: Enable "Strong Closes Only" to filter out false breakouts caused by candle wicks, requiring more than 50% of the candle body to close outside the range.

Details

The script utilizes a normalized price volatility metric, measuring the standard deviation of price relative to a historical lookback period on a [0,1] scale. When this volatility reaches a local low and begins to expand, a channel is established between the local price extremes. These zones are persistent until price action invalidates them through a breakout or a touch, depending on settings. The tool incorporates intraday volume delta (requested from lower timeframes) to provide a granular view of the buying and selling pressure active within the consolidation range.

Settings

Main Settings

  • Nested Channels: When enabled, multiple overlapping channels can exist simultaneously. When disabled, only the most recent channel is active.
  • Strong Closes Only: If checked, breakouts are only confirmed if a significant portion of the candle body closes outside the channel.
  • Normalization Length: The number of bars used to calculate highest/lowest price for normalization.
  • Box Detection Length: The sensitivity of the pattern detection; lower values result in more frequent channel formation.

Volume Analysis

  • Show Volume Analysis: Toggles the visibility of volume bars inside the channels.
  • Volume Display Mode: Choose between Raw Volume (total), Comparison (Up vs. Down), or Delta (Net).
  • Volume Delta Timeframe Source: Sets the timeframe used for granular volume calculation.
  • Volume Scale: Adjusts the visual height of the internal volume bars.

Appearance

  • Volume Text Size: Controls the size of the numerical volume data displayed.
  • Bullish/Bearish Color: Customizes the colors for positive and negative momentum elements.

FAQ

How do I interpret the internal volume bars? The bars represent the volume distribution during the channel's duration. Depending on your mode, they show total volume, a comparison of up/down volume, or the net delta, helping you see where pressure is concentrated.

What is the "Gauge" on the side of the box? The gauge is a visual representation of where the current volume delta sits within the historical range of that specific channel, providing a quick look at momentum bias.

How can I access the Smart Money Breakout Channels? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
