The Dynamic Linear Regression Channels indicator automatically plots and resets linear regression channels based on price breakouts, providing a dynamic way to identify trend changes, support and resistance levels, and mean reversion opportunities.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and potential reversal points. Unlike static regression tools, this indicator resets its starting point whenever the price closes outside of the established channel boundaries.

  • Trend Identification: When the price is within a channel, the slope of the median line indicates the current trend direction.
  • Support and Resistance: The upper and lower deviation lines act as dynamic resistance and support zones.
  • Mean Reversion: Traders often look for price to return to the median line after touching or exceeding the outer deviation bands.
  • Trend Shifts: A breakout (closing outside the channel) triggers the creation of a new channel, signaling a potential shift in market structure or momentum.

Details

The script calculates a linear regression line using the least squares method, beginning from the bar where the previous channel was breached. It determines the slope, average, and intercept to project the median line. The upper and lower boundaries are then calculated using a standard deviation multiplier.

By using a dynamic start point rather than a fixed lookback period, the length of the channel adjusts to the actual duration of the trend. Users should be aware that setting very high deviation multipliers may cause the script to reference a large number of bars if a breakout does not occur for an extended period.

Settings

  • Upper Deviation: Sets the standard deviation multiplier for the upper channel boundary.
  • Upper Color: Defines the color and transparency for the upper zone of the channel.
  • Lower Deviation: Sets the standard deviation multiplier for the lower channel boundary.
  • Lower Color: Defines the color and transparency for the lower zone of the channel.

FAQ

How does the indicator decide when to start a new channel?

A new channel is initiated automatically whenever the price closes above the upper deviation line or below the lower deviation line of the current channel.

Can I use this for mean reversion trading?

Yes, the indicator is designed to highlight overextended price action relative to the current linear trend, which often precedes a return to the median intercept.
