CM_RSI Plus EMA
Aug 11, 2014

The CM_RSI Plus EMA indicator identifies momentum shifts and potential entry points by combining a standard Relative Strength Index (RSI) with an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) signal line.
Usage
The Usage section describes how to interpret the interaction between the RSI and its signal line to identify market trends and reversals.
- Bullish Signal: A bullish entry signal is often identified when the RSI line crosses above the EMA signal line. This suggests increasing upward momentum.
- Bearish Signal: A bearish exit or entry signal is identified when the RSI line crosses below the EMA signal line, indicating weakening momentum.
- Overbought/Oversold Levels: The indicator features horizontal bands at 80 (overbought) and 20 (oversold). Traders look for RSI reversals from these extreme levels to confirm potential trend exhaustion.
- Strategy Confluence: This tool is frequently used in conjunction with volatility indicators, such as the Williams Vix Fix, where an RSI/EMA crossover occurring during a volatility peak can signal a high-probability market bottom.
Details
The CM_RSI Plus EMA is constructed using a standard RSI calculation based on the Relative Moving Average (RMA). Unlike standard RSI indicators that often use a 14-period setting, this script defaults to a 20-period RSI to provide a smoother trend perspective.
The signal line is an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) calculated directly from the RSI values rather than price data. By applying a 10-period EMA to the RSI, the indicator filters out minor fluctuations, providing a clearer signal for momentum crossovers. The visual output includes a solid line for the RSI and a series of circles for the EMA signal line to allow for easy differentiation between the two components.
Settings
- RSI Length: Determines the number of bars used to calculate the Relative Strength Index. Higher values result in a smoother but slower RSI.
- EMA of RSI Length: Sets the period for the Exponential Moving Average applied to the RSI. This controls the sensitivity of the signal line.
- Upper Line: The threshold for the overbought zone (defaulted to 80).
- Lower Line: The threshold for the oversold zone (defaulted to 20).
FAQ
What are the primary signals generated by this indicator?
The primary signals are the crossovers between the RSI line and the EMA signal line. An RSI crossing above the EMA indicates a bullish momentum shift, while a cross below indicates a bearish shift.
How does this differ from a standard RSI?
While a standard RSI only shows the momentum value, this version adds an EMA "trigger" line. This allows traders to identify momentum changes more objectively through crossovers rather than relying solely on slope or overbought/oversold levels.
