Moving Averages

The Stacked Moving Averages indicator identifies market trend direction and strength by analyzing the sequential alignment of up to five different moving averages. It provides traders with a clear visual representation of uptrends, downtrends, or neutral states based on whether the selected averages are perfectly "stacked" in ascending or descending order.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This tool is primarily used to confirm trend continuity or identify potential reversals when the "stacked" condition breaks.

  • Uptrend Identification: An uptrend is defined when the moving averages are aligned in descending order of speed (MA1 > MA2 > MA3 > MA4 > MA5). When this condition is met, the background colors change to highlight the bullish momentum.
  • Downtrend Identification: A downtrend is defined when the moving averages are aligned in ascending order of speed (MA5 > MA4 > MA3 > MA2 > MA1). The indicator highlights the chart background to signify bearish momentum.
  • Neutral State: If the moving averages cross or are not perfectly sequential, no background highlight is applied, indicating a range-bound or transitionary market.

Traders can use this tool to filter trades, only taking long positions during a "green" stacked phase or short positions during a "red" stacked phase.

Details

The script calculates up to five moving averages based on user-defined lengths and types. It utilizes a security function wrapper to allow for multi-timeframe analysis, enabling users to view stacked conditions from higher timeframes on their current chart.

The logic is modular; if the lengths for MA4 or MA5 are set to zero, the script automatically ignores those layers and calculates the trend based only on the remaining active averages. This allows for flexibility between a simple 3-MA stack or a more complex 5-MA stack. Supported moving average types include Simple (SMA), Exponential (EMA), Double Exponential (DEMA), Weighted (WMA), Hull (HMA), and Regularized (RMA).

Settings

  • Timeframe: Determines the timeframe from which the moving averages are calculated.
  • Length Moving Average 1-5: Sets the lookback period for each individual average. Setting Length 4 or 5 to "0" disables them.
  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • Moving Average: A dropdown menu to select the calculation method (SMA, EMA, DEMA, WMA, HMA, or RMA).
  • Show Signals?: A toggle to show or hide the actual moving average lines on the price chart.
  • Uptrend/Downtrend Color: Customizes the background colors used to highlight specific trend states.

FAQ

How do I interpret the background colors? A background highlight appears only when the moving averages are perfectly stacked. If the fastest MA is on top and the slowest is on the bottom, it indicates a strong uptrend. The reverse indicates a strong downtrend.

Can I use this for multi-timeframe analysis? Yes, by changing the "Timeframe" input in the settings, you can see if the moving averages are stacked on a higher timeframe while trading on a lower timeframe.

How do I access the Stacked Moving Averages? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
