The Moving Averages With Continuous Periods indicator provides a reimagined approach to moving averages by utilizing floating-point period calculations for SMA, WMA, and HMA variants, enabling fractional lengths that eliminate the discontinuities and lag typically found in integer-based calculations.

Fractional Period Adjustment

Unlike standard moving averages that require whole numbers (e.g., 9 or 10), this tool allows for decimal lengths (e.g., 9.7). This is particularly useful for optimization processes or when moving average lengths are driven by external oscillators or market volatility metrics, as it prevents "jumps" in the indicator value when the period changes.

Trend Identification and Visualization

The indicator includes a built-in trend gradient system to help users visualize trend strength and direction. Users can choose between four different styles:

  • Solid: A single color for the entire line.
  • Two Tone: A gradient transitioning between the up and down colors.
  • Three Tone: Includes a neutral color for transitional periods.
  • Polar: Instantaneous color switching based on the trend slope.

The script's core logic is based on continuous weight kernels rather than discrete summation.

  • Continuous SMA: When a length like 9.7 is used, the script weights the first 9 periods fully and the 10th period at 0.7 of its value, normalizing the final sum by the fractional length.
  • Continuous WMA: Uses a linear slope function integrated across the window. The normalization constant is calculated based on the area under the slope for the specific fractional length, ensuring mathematical consistency.
  • Optimized HMA: The Hull Moving Average implementation utilizes floating-point mathematics throughout its internal WMA cascade. This significantly reduces the overshoot and "whipsaw" effects common in standard integer-based HMA calculations.
  • Gradient Mathematics: The coloring system uses the arctangent of price changes normalized by ATR. This maps the trend angle to a 0-1 range, providing context-aware visual feedback that respects current market volatility.

  • Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., Close, Open, HL2).
  • Length: The lookback period for the moving average. Supports decimal increments (step of 0.125).
  • MA Style: Selection between Simple Moving Average (SMA), Weighted Moving Average (WMA), and Hull Moving Average (HMA).

Visual Settings

  • Gradient Style: Determines how the moving average line is colored (Solid, Two Tone, Three Tone, or Polar).
  • Up Color: The color used to represent bullish momentum.
  • Neutral/Solid Color: The color used for neutral trends or when "Solid" style is selected.
  • Down Color: The color used to represent bearish momentum.
  • Line Width: Adjusts the thickness of the plotted line.

How do fractional periods benefit my trading? Fractional periods allow for finer optimization and smoother transitions. If a strategy performs best at a length of 10.5, this script can execute that precisely, whereas a standard MA would force you to choose between 10 or 11, potentially missing the optimal trend capture.

What makes the HMA version different from the standard one? Traditional HMA implementations round the square root of the length to the nearest integer.
