The Parabolic RSI indicator tool applies the Parabolic SAR algorithm directly to the Relative Strength Index (RSI) to help traders identify momentum shifts and potential reversal points within an oscillator framework.

Usage

The Parabolic RSI is used to track trend shifts within the RSI's movement. It displays SAR dots on the oscillator to indicate the current direction of momentum.

  • Strong Reversal Signals (Big Diamonds): These appear when the Parabolic SAR flips below the 30 (oversold) level or above the 70 (overbought) level. These signals indicate a significant potential for a trend reversal.
  • Regular Signals (Small Diamonds): These occur when the Parabolic SAR flips within the neutral RSI range (between 30 and 70), suggesting minor momentum shifts or continuations.
  • Chart Overlays: The tool automatically plots these diamond signals on the price chart, allowing users to see the impact of RSI momentum shifts on price action without constantly looking at the oscillator pane.

Details

The indicator constructs a custom Parabolic SAR calculation based on RSI values rather than price. By applying SAR logic to the RSI, the tool filters out minor price noise and focuses on the underlying momentum. The system categorizes signals based on their location relative to the standard RSI thresholds (30 and 70), assuming that momentum flips occurring in extreme zones carry more weight than those in the middle of the range.

Settings

RSI

  • RSI Length: Determines the lookback period for the RSI calculation.

Thresholds

  • Threshold ⭱: Sets the upper level (default 70) used to identify strong bearish reversal signals.
  • Threshold ⤓: Sets the lower level (default 30) used to identify strong bullish reversal signals.

SAR

  • SAR: Toggles the visibility of the Parabolic SAR dots on the RSI line.
  • Start: The initial acceleration factor for the Parabolic SAR.
  • Increment: The rate at which the acceleration factor increases when a new extreme is reached.
  • Maximum: The maximum value the acceleration factor can reach.
  • Colors: Allows customization of the upward and downward momentum colors.
