Hull Weighted Exponential Moving Average
Jul 23, 2022

The Hull Weighted Exponential Moving Average indicator provides a zero-lag trend-following solution by combining the reactive properties of the Hull Moving Average with the smoothing characteristics of the Weighted Exponential Moving Average.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential reversal points. Users can observe the color transitions of the HWEMA line to gauge market sentiment.
- Trend Identification: A green line indicates an upward trend, while a red line indicates a downward trend.
- Trade Signals: A LONG signal is generated when the line transitions from red to green. Conversely, a SHORT signal is generated when the line transitions from green to red.
- Candle Coloring: The "Color Candles" option allows users to filter market ranges and confirm trend strength directly on the price bars. Green and teal candles represent bullish conditions, while red and maroon represent bearish conditions. Gray candles indicate neutral or conflicting signals.
Details
The Hull Weighted Exponential Moving Average (HWEMA) is based on research by Vincent Charles in "Hull-WEMA: A Novel Zero-Lag Approach in the Moving Average Family". The methodology aims to solve the inherent lag found in traditional moving averages, specifically the Weighted Exponential Moving Average (WEMA) introduced in 2013.
The calculation involves three primary stages:
- WMA Calculation: A standard Weighted Moving Average is applied to the source data.
- WEMA Smoothing: The alpha parameter is applied to the WMA value to create a Weighted Exponential Moving Average.
- Hull Transformation: The resulting WEMA values are processed through the Hull Moving Average algorithm to achieve the final zero-lag output.
Settings
SETTINGS
- Length: Sets the lookback period for the moving average calculations. Higher values produce smoother lines, while lower values increase sensitivity.
- Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Alpha: Controls the smoothing factor of the WEMA component. This value ranges from 0.01 to 1.0.
- Color Candles: When enabled, the chart bars will change color based on the relationship between price and the HWEMA value.
ALERTS
- Alerts: Selects which signal types trigger a notification. Options include "Long", "Short", or "Both".
FAQ
How does HWEMA differ from a standard Hull Moving Average? The HWEMA incorporates an additional Weighted Exponential Moving Average layer before the Hull transformation, which aims to provide a more accurate and stable trend line compared to a standalone HMA.
What is the significance of the Alpha setting? The Alpha setting determines the weight given to the most recent data point in the WEMA calculation; a higher Alpha makes the indicator more responsive to recent price changes.
How can I access the Hull Weighted Exponential Moving Average? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
