Repainting Functionality

The Square Root Weighted Moving Average indicator provides a responsive trend-following filter that uses square root weighting to balance price lag and smoothing for improved trade signal detection.

Usage

The Square Root Weighted Moving Average (SRWMA) is primarily used to identify market trends and potential reversal points. Traders can interpret the indicator based on its color-coded output:

  • Bullish Trend: When the price is above the SRWMA line, the indicator turns green, suggesting a potential buy opportunity or an ongoing uptrend.
  • Bearish Trend: When the price falls below the SRWMA line, the indicator turns red, suggesting a potential sell opportunity or a downtrend.

The Length setting is the primary driver of the indicator's sensitivity. A shorter length will track price movements closely for scalping or day trading, while a longer length will filter out "market noise" for swing trading. Users can also enable Bar Color Change to visually sync the price bars with the detected trend.

Details

The SRWMA is a variation of the classic Weighted Moving Average (WMA). In a standard WMA, weights decrease linearly (e.g., 10, 9, 8...). The SRWMA instead calculates weights based on the square root of the remaining length ($weight = \sqrt{length - i}$).

By using the square root of the index, the weight decay is less aggressive than a linear WMA but more pronounced than a Simple Moving Average (SMA). This mathematical approach provides a unique curve that reacts quickly to recent price changes while maintaining enough historical data to prevent excessive "whipsaws" in volatile markets. The calculation involves summing the product of the price and its square root weight, then dividing by the sum of all weights used in the window.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • Resolution: Allows the indicator to be calculated based on a different timeframe than the current chart.
  • Allow Repainting?: Toggles whether the indicator uses data from the current (unconfirmed) bar when calculating higher timeframe values.
  • Allow Bar Color Change?: When enabled, the chart's price bars will change color to match the bullish or bearish state of the SRWMA.
  • Length: The lookback period used for the moving average calculation. Higher values result in more smoothing, while lower values increase responsiveness.

FAQ

How does the SRWMA differ from a standard Weighted Moving Average? While a standard WMA applies linear weight to prices, the SRWMA uses the square root of the weight. This dampens the influence of the most recent bars slightly more than a WMA but remains significantly faster than a Simple Moving Average (SMA).

Can I use this indicator for automated alerts? Yes, the script includes built-in alert conditions for "Buy Signals" (bullish crossovers) and "Sell Signals" (bearish crossunders) to notify you immediately when a trend change is detected.

How do I access the Square Root Weighted Moving Average? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
