The Heiken Ashi Pivot Breakout Trailing Stop indicator provides a dynamic support and resistance level based on Heiken Ashi price action to identify breakout entries and manage trade exits. It offers an objective way to track swing pivots, allowing traders to confirm the initiation of a momentum move or the conclusion of a breakout trend.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to capture breakout movements. This tool is specifically designed for breakout trading rather than long-term trend following, as it reacts quickly to changes in price structure.

  • Bullish Breakouts: When the price crosses above the trailing stop line, it suggests a bullish breakout. The line then tracks the most recent swing low pivot to act as a protective stop.
  • Bearish Breakouts: When the price crosses below the trailing stop line, it suggests a bearish breakout. The line then tracks the most recent swing high pivot to act as a ceiling for the trade.
  • Trade Management: Traders can use the line as a hard exit signal. In an uptrend, if the price breaks below the identified swing low pivot, the breakout is considered over. In a downtrend, if the price breaks above the identified swing high pivot, the bearish momentum is considered exhausted.

This indicator is most effective when paired with chart patterns (such as triangles, flags, or wedges) or technical oscillators (like RSI divergence) to confirm the validity of a breakout.

Details

The Heiken Ashi Pivot Breakout Trailing Stop is inspired by concepts found in Welles Wilder’s Swing Index System and the Accumulative Swing Index (ASI). While the ASI often uses complex calculations to determine swing points, this tool simplifies the process by utilizing Heiken Ashi candle color changes directly on the price chart.

The script monitors Heiken Ashi "open" and "close" values to detect shifts in momentum. When a Heiken Ashi bar changes color (e.g., green to red), the script identifies a local swing high. Conversely, a change from red to green identifies a local swing low. These pivots are used to set the trailing stop levels. Unlike standard trend-following indicators, these levels are tightly bound to recent price pivots, making them suitable for high-momentum breakout scenarios where price can move rapidly.

Settings

  • Breakout Trailing Stop (Plot): Visualizes the current trailing stop level on the chart. The color shifts between green (bullish) and red (bearish) based on whether the price is above or below the pivot level.
  • Alerts: Includes built-in alert conditions for breakout direction changes (Up/Down) and specific crossover events to notify users the moment a trailing stop is breached.

FAQ

What makes this different from a standard Trailing Stop? This indicator specifically uses Heiken Ashi swing pivots rather than fixed percentages or ATR values, making it more responsive to structural price shifts during breakouts.

Can this be used for long-term trend following? While possible, it is primarily designed for breakout trading. Because it exits as soon as price breaches the most recent pivot, it may exit trades earlier than traditional trend-following tools during deep pullbacks.
