The Auto Trendlines & Market Structure - MTF indicator automatically identifies support and resistance trendlines through swing pivots and classifies market structure into seven distinct states. This tool removes subjectivity from manual drawing while providing multi-timeframe insights into trend strength and volatility-normalized slopes.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to map market structure and identify potential breakouts or reversals. The indicator detects the two most recent valid pivots to draw active resistance (highs) and support (lows) lines.

Examples of structure interpretation:

  • Uptrend/Downtrend: Both active trendlines slope in the same direction.
  • Expanding/Contracting: Trendlines diverge or converge, signaling potential volatility shifts or breakouts.
  • Range: Both lines are relatively flat within a specific threshold.
  • HH/LL Trending: Only one active trendline is detected, indicating a one-sided structural move.

A multi-timeframe (MTF) panel in the top-right corner allows users to compare the current chart's structure against three higher timeframes. This helps traders identify if a local trend aligns with a broader market regime.

Details

The script utilizes several advanced concepts to ensure technical accuracy and readability:

  • Pivot Validation: To prevent noisy output, candidate trendlines are checked against older pivots. If historical price action penetrates a candidate line beyond a 0.3 ATR tolerance, the line is rejected.
  • ATR-Normalized Slope: Slope is calculated in ATR-per-bar units rather than raw price. This allows for consistent strength measurements (Weak to Very Strong) across different assets and timeframes.
  • Trendline Lifecycle: Lines are projected forward until price closes more than 0.5 ATR beyond them. Once invalidated, the line freezes as a dashed historical reference, providing context for previous market boundaries.
  • Historical Layer: The script maintains a FIFO (First-In-First-Out) trail of up to 80 historical lines to prevent chart clutter while preserving structural context.

Settings

The settings are categorized into detection, visual, and alert groups:

  • Pivot Lookback Mode: Choose between "Adaptive" (scales 5–10 bars based on volatility) or "Fixed" (manual setting from 3–15 bars).
  • Show Trend Lines: Toggles the active dual-layer neon trendlines.
  • Show Channel Fill: Enables a gradient fill between active support and resistance lines (disabled during Expanding/Contracting states for clarity).
  • Show MTF Panel: Toggles the multi-timeframe classification dashboard.
  • Show Pivot Markers: Displays triangle markers at the most recent pivot points.
  • Show Trend Status: Displays a large badge on the chart indicating the current structural class.
  • Line Width (Core): Adjusts the thickness of the primary trendline; the outer glow scales automatically.
  • Alerts: Includes triggers for trend class changes, resistance breaks, and support breaks.

FAQ

How do I interpret the strength gauge in the MTF panel? The strength gauge is based on ATR-normalized slope values. A higher strength (e.g., "Very Strong") indicates a steeper slope relative to current volatility, while "Weak" suggests a flatter, less aggressive trend.

Why do some trendlines disappear or turn dashed? Trendlines become dashed historical references when they are replaced by a more recent valid pivot pair or when price closes significantly beyond the line (invalidating it).
