The QQE Trailing Line for Trailing Stop | jh indicator applies the trailing line logic of the Qualitative Quantitative Estimation (QQE) directly to price action to serve as a trend-following baseline and exit tool. It provides a reactive trailing stop-loss mechanism that follows price movements more closely than traditional measures like the Kijun-sen, allowing traders to lock in profits or exit positions more efficiently when trend direction shifts.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly as a trend filter and an exit strategy. The script plots a dynamic trailing line on the chart that changes color based on the relationship between price and the baseline.

  • Trend Filtering: When price is above the trailing line (colored green), the market is considered in an uptrend. When price is below the line (colored red), the market is in a downtrend.
  • Trailing Stop/Exit: Traders can use the line as a dynamic stop-loss. A close across the line suggests a potential trend reversal, signaling an exit.
  • ATR Bands: The script includes optional ATR (Average True Range) bands to provide visual context for volatility and potential take-profit or stop-loss levels.
  • ATR Violation Signals: Small diamond shapes appear when the distance between the price and the baseline exceeds a 1x ATR threshold, indicating potential overextension or a "fail" in the standard trend distance.

Details

The script utilizes the core mathematical components of the Qualitative Quantitative Estimation (QQE), which typically involves a smoothed RSI and an ATR-based trailing band. In this implementation, the trailing logic is applied to the price to create a baseline.

The indicator offers two distinct calculation methods for the QQE trailing line:

  1. QQE 1: Focuses on a standard trailing stop logic based on the Fast ATR of the smoothed RSI.
  2. QQE 2: Implements a more rigid banding system that prevents the trailing line from moving against the trend direction until a crossover occurs, providing a different sensitivity during trend transitions.

This tool also integrates ATR measurement directly into the interface, displaying labels for both the previous and current ATR values on the last bar to assist in manual risk calculation.

Settings

  • QQE 1 or 2: Selects between two different calculation methods for the trailing line behavior.
  • Signal Length: Sets the period used for the RSI component of the QQE calculation.
  • Smoothening Length: Determines the degree of EMA smoothing applied to the signal.
  • QQE Factor: A multiplier that adjusts the width or sensitivity of the trailing line.
  • Show ATR Bands: Toggles the visibility of the 1.0 and 1.5 ATR bands around the price.
  • Show 1 x ATR Violation: Enables diamond markers when price deviates from the baseline by more than 1x ATR.
  • Color Bars: When enabled, price bars are colored according to their position relative to the baseline.

FAQ

How do I use the different QQE options?

The first option provides a more fluid trailing line, while the second option is designed to stay flat or move only in the direction of the trend until a break occurs, which can be useful for avoiding premature exits in choppy markets.

What do the diamond shapes represent?

Diamonds appear when the price is significantly far from the baseline (specifically greater than 1x ATR). This helps identify moments where the price may be overextended or where the trend strength is exceptionally high.
