The Intelligent Moving Average indicator automatically identifies and plots the most profitable pair of simple moving averages from a selection of four user-defined lengths to provide dynamic trend-following signals.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify optimal trend signals based on historical performance. The tool evaluates six different crossover combinations between four SMA lengths and highlights the specific pair currently yielding the highest simulated profit.

  • Dynamic Selection: The indicator calculates the profitability of crossovers for SMA 1 & 2, 1 & 3, 1 & 4, 2 & 3, 2 & 4, and 3 & 4. Only the pair with the best performance is displayed on the chart.
  • Visual Cues: When a specific pair becomes the top performer, the script transitions its visual focus to those averages. Traders can use the displayed averages to identify trend direction and potential entry or exit points based on the plotted arrows.
  • Optimal Configuration: For best results, it is recommended to set the lengths in ascending order (e.g., Length 1 < Length 2 < Length 3 < Length 4) to ensure a logical hierarchy between fast and slow moving averages.

Details

The script executes a real-time backtest across six different moving average combinations. It tracks the cumulative profit for each pair by calculating the price difference between crossovers and crossunders, while also accounting for a user-defined fee percentage to simulate realistic trading conditions.

The performance calculation uses a specific "Source for Profit Calculation" (defaulting to OHLC4) to determine the gains or losses of each signal. As market conditions change, the cumulative profit of one SMA pair may overtake another; the indicator dynamically updates the "active" pair on the chart to reflect this shift, ensuring the trader is always viewing the historically most effective settings for the current asset and timeframe.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used to calculate the four Simple Moving Averages.
  • SMA 1-4 length: Sets the period for each of the four individual moving averages.
  • Source for Profit Calculation: The price point used to determine the simulated profit/loss for the internal backtesting engine.
  • Fee: The percentage-based fee deducted from each simulated trade to provide a more accurate profitability metric.

FAQ

How do I access the Intelligent Moving Average?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Why do the moving averages on my chart occasionally disappear or change?

The indicator only displays the two moving averages that currently form the most profitable crossover pair. If a different combination begins performing better, the script will switch the visible lines to the new optimal pair.

Can I use this for scalping or long-term trading?

Yes, by adjusting the four SMA lengths, you can adapt the tool for different styles. Shorter lengths are generally better for scalping, while longer lengths are suited for trend following on higher timeframes.
