# ATH/ATL Tracker

ATH/ATL Tracker is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

Charts the price change between each new all-time high or low and the previous record across an instrument's full history, as a histogram with per-record tooltips showing price and date. A dashboard averages how long records take to form and how far they stretch, giving traders a sentiment read on record-setting behavior.

**ATH/ATL Tracker** charts how far every new all-time high or all-time low traveled beyond the previous one, across the instrument's entire available history, as a histogram. Tooltips log the price and date of each record, and a dashboard averages the gaps: how long [record extremes](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/all-time-and-52-week-extremes/) take to form and how large the moves between them run.

## How to Trade the ATH/ATL Tracker?

- **Tall bars**: the biggest jumps between successive records stand out instantly, flagging the market's most explosive record-setting phases.
- **Record frequency**: a swelling count of fresh highs reflects confidence and willingness to pay elevated prices; thinning records warn of fading momentum or growing caution.
- **Dashboard averages**: Average Duration estimates how long the market typically waits between records, while Average Change gives the net signed average of record moves (ATH extensions positive, ATL extensions negative): base rates for anticipating the next one.

The tracker filters trivial records by referencing a higher timeframe: on a 1-minute chart, five consecutive new highs collapse into the single true ATH when validated against a 5-minute duration, and the tool warns you if the selected timeframe is suboptimal. Watching which sectors keep printing records is a quick leaders-versus-laggards check, in the spirit of the library's [breadth and sentiment tools](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/family/sentiment-breadth/).

## ATH/ATL Tracker Settings

- **Duration**: the higher timeframe used to validate meaningful ATHs and ATLs.
- **Order**: chronological or reverse-chronological bar layout.
- **Bar Width / Bar Spacing**: sizing and separation of the histogram bars.
- **Dashboard Settings**: size and placement of the averages panel.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What do the two dashboard averages tell me?

Average Duration measures the mean interval in days between new records, useful for gauging when another might plausibly arrive. Average Change reports the signed mean of every change shown in the histogram, with ATH extensions counted as positive and ATL extensions as negative, so it reads as a net figure rather than the size of a typical record extension.

### Should I use this or the All Time High (ATH) Levels indicator?

They do different jobs: the Tracker studies behavior between records, while [All Time High (ATH) Levels](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/all-time-high-ath-levels/) plots the records themselves as graded support and resistance. Context from one, trade location from the other.

### Is the ATH/ATL Tracker free?

Yes, it is free on the LuxAlgo Library. You can also run it in Quant, our coding agent, straight from this page to see how records developed on any symbol. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
