The Moving Average Stop and Reverse (MASAR) indicator provides dynamic trailing stop and reversal levels by adapting to price momentum through moving average fluctuations rather than a static acceleration factor.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential exit or entry points. The indicator plots a continuous line on the chart that stays below the price during an uptrend (green) and above the price during a downtrend (red).

Users can utilize this tool to:

  • Identify Trend Reversals: A change in the position of the MASAR line relative to the price indicates a potential trend shift.
  • Set Trailing Stops: The dynamic line serves as a reference for stop-loss placement that tightens during periods of high volatility or significant moving average shifts.
  • Determine Market Bias: When the price is above the MASAR line, the bias is bullish; when below, the bias is bearish.

The indicator is most effective in trending markets. In sideways or range-bound markets, it may produce frequent whipsaws. Users should calibrate the interval and length settings to match the specific volatility of the asset and timeframe being traded.

Details

The MASAR indicator serves as a dynamic alternative to the traditional Parabolic SAR. While the standard Parabolic SAR uses a fixed acceleration factor to move the stop level closer to the price, MASAR calculates its movement based on the absolute change in a selected moving average.

The logic incorporates an "Extreme Point" mechanism. When a trend reversal occurs, the script identifies the highest high or lowest low over a user-defined hour interval to reset the starting point of the new trend. The step-by-step movement of the stop level is then dictated by the delta of the underlying moving average (Simple, Exponential, or Smoothed), allowing the indicator to speed up or slow down based on actual price smoothing logic rather than a predetermined increment.

Settings

  • Extreme Point Interval (hours): Determines the lookback period (in hours) used to find the highest high or lowest low for trend reset points.
  • Length: The lookback period used for the internal moving average calculation.
  • Moving Average Type: Allows the user to choose between Simple (SMA), Exponential (EMA), or Smoothed (RMA) averages to drive the indicator's sensitivity.

FAQ

How does MASAR differ from the standard Parabolic SAR?

Unlike the Parabolic SAR which uses a mathematical acceleration factor, MASAR uses the rate of change of a moving average to adjust the stop level, making it more responsive to actual price trends and smoothing.

What market conditions are best for this indicator?

MASAR is designed for trending environments. It excels at capturing long moves while providing a trailing exit, though it may underperform in choppy, non-trending markets.

How can I get access to the Moving Average Stop and Reverse (MASAR)?
