Moving Averages

The Boosted Moving Average indicator enhances the traditional Exponential Moving Average (EMA) by applying a boosting factor that amplifies responsiveness to price changes while maintaining a smooth trajectory.

Usage

The Boosted Moving Average (BMA) is used to identify trend direction and potential reversals with higher sensitivity than standard moving averages. It is particularly useful for traders looking to capture early price shifts without the excessive noise typical of shorter-period averages.

  • Trend Identification: The indicator features a color-coded plot. A green line indicates a bullish trend, while a red line indicates a bearish trend.
  • Entry/Exit Signals: Traders can monitor the color changes as potential signals for trend exhaustion or new trend formation.
  • Responsiveness Adjustments: By increasing the Boost Factor, the BMA reacts more aggressively to price movements, which can be useful in volatile markets. Decreasing the factor provides a more stable, lagging line suitable for long-term trend following.

Details

The script utilizes a dual EMA approach to derive its values. It calculates a base EMA using the user-defined length and a second EMA at half that length. The "boosted" component is created by taking the shorter EMA and adding the product of the "Boost Factor" and the difference between the two EMAs.

To ensure the resulting line is actionable and not overly erratic, a final smoothing EMA is applied. The period of this final smoothing is dynamically calculated by dividing the main length by the sensitivity factor, ensuring the balance between speed and clarity remains consistent across different settings.

Settings

  • Boosted MA Length: Sets the lookback period for the primary EMA calculations. Higher values result in a smoother, slower indicator.
  • Boost factor: A multiplier that amplifies the difference between the short and long EMAs. Higher values increase reactivity to price changes.
  • Source: Determines which price data (Close, Open, High, Low, etc.) is used for the calculation.

FAQ

How do I interpret the color changes on the BMA?
The BMA turns green when the current value is higher than its previous weighted moving average, indicating bullish momentum. It turns red when the value is lower, indicating bearish momentum.

What is the benefit of the Boost Factor over a standard EMA?
The Boost Factor allows the indicator to "anticipate" or react to momentum shifts faster than a standard EMA of the same length by mathematically emphasizing the divergence between short-term and medium-term price action.
