Ultimate Moving Average
Jul 15, 2021

The Ultimate Moving Average indicator provides a highly adaptive trend-following solution that dynamically adjusts its length and weighting based on real-time volatility and momentum.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential entry points. The indicator functions as a primary trend filter that reacts faster than traditional fixed-length moving averages during high-activity periods and smooths out noise during consolidation.
- Trend Identification: The color-coded plot indicates trend strength. Dark green suggests a strong bullish trend, light green a weakening bullish trend, dark red a strong bearish trend, and light red a weakening bearish trend.
- Adaptive Length: During volatile markets, the script automatically tightens (shortens the length) to track price more closely, while in choppy or sideways markets, it loosens (increases the length) to avoid false signals.
- Momentum Weighting: The indicator utilizes momentum to adjust its internal weighting. When momentum reaches extreme levels, the average becomes more reactive to current price action.
Details
The Ultimate Moving Average is constructed using a multi-layered adaptation logic that sets it apart from standard moving averages. It integrates concepts from the Variable Power Weighted Moving Average and the Variable Length Moving Average.
- Volatility-Based Length: The script calculates a dynamic length by analyzing price position relative to standard deviation bands. If price moves toward extreme volatility bands, the length decreases toward the
MinLength. If price remains near the mean, the length increases toward theMaxLength. - Momentum-Weighted Power: The indicator applies a power-weighted calculation where the exponent is determined by the Money Flow Index (MFI). In cases where volume data is unavailable, it defaults to a price-based momentum calculation. High momentum increases the "power" of the weight, making the average significantly more responsive.
- Smoothing: A final smoothing layer is applied via a Weighted Moving Average (WMA) to ensure the output remains usable for trend following despite the rapid internal calculations.
Settings
- Source: The price data point used for calculations (default is Close).
- Resolution: Allows the indicator to be calculated based on a different timeframe than the chart.
- Allow Repainting?: Determines if the indicator uses data from the current candle for higher timeframe calculations.
- Allow Bar Color Change?: Enables or disables the changing of candle colors to match the trend signal.
- Accelerator: A multiplier that increases the sensitivity of the momentum-weighted power calculation.
- MinLength: The minimum allowed length the moving average can reach during high volatility.
- MaxLength: The maximum allowed length the moving average can reach during low volatility.
- SmoothLength: The period used for the final smoothing of the UMA line.
FAQ
How do I interpret the different colors on the Ultimate Moving Average? The colors represent both direction and momentum. Darker colors signify strong trending momentum, while lighter shades indicate that the trend may be slowing down or losing strength.
Can I use this indicator for scalping or long-term investing?
Yes, because the length is adaptive, the indicator is designed to perform across various timeframes. You can adjust the MinLength and MaxLength settings to better suit your specific trading style.
How can I access the Ultimate Moving Average? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
