# HTF Fair Value Gap

HTF Fair Value Gap is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

Tracks fair value gaps from a higher timeframe while you trade a lower one: background shading flags each bullish or bearish HTF gap, and the most recent gap is drawn as a candle beside price with dashed boundary lines and wicks showing post-formation excursions. A status dashboard reports mitigation at a glance.

**HTF Fair Value Gap** detects [fair value gaps](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/fair-value-gap/) on a higher timeframe of your choosing and keeps them in front of you while you execute on a lower one. Background shading flags every higher timeframe gap as it occurs (green for bullish, red for bearish) while the most recent gap is rendered as a candle offset to the right of price, its dashed lines marking the gap's upper and lower boundaries and its wicks recording price's deviations from those boundaries since formation. A Status dashboard completes the picture, reporting whether the gap has been mitigated.

## How to Trade the HTF Fair Value Gap?

- **Green background**: a bullish higher timeframe gap has printed, momentum context that favors long-side ideas on the trading timeframe.
- **Red background**: the bearish equivalent, flagging downside imbalance from above your chart.
- **Dashed boundary lines**: the most recent gap's edges are natural reference levels for entries, stops, and targets as price rotates back into the zone.
- **Solid border on the FVG candle**: the gap remains unmitigated. The imbalance is still open, and the level retains its draw on price.

The wicks on the projected candle deserve attention: they summarize post-formation excursions from the gap's boundaries, a compact read on whether the gap is holding within the ongoing trend or being ground down.

## HTF Fair Value Gap Settings

- **Timeframe**: the higher timeframe scanned for fair value gaps.
- **Offset** and **Width**: where the projected FVG candle sits relative to the last bar, and how many bars wide it draws.
- **Dashboard inputs**: visibility, location, and size of the Status dashboard.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does "mitigated" mean on the dashboard?

The Status reads Mitigated when price closes through the gap's far boundary: below the bottom of a bullish gap, or above the top of a bearish gap. Price trading back into the gap without closing beyond it still reads Unmitigated. The indicator makes the distinction visible twice: in the dashboard status and in the solid border drawn on an unmitigated gap's candle.

### Why use higher timeframe gaps instead of chart-timeframe ones?

Gaps from above your chart carry weight that intrabar noise does not, and framing them on the execution timeframe lets you time entries inside levels you would otherwise never see. If your interest is gaps that flip roles after being filled, [Inversion Fair Value Gaps (IFVG)](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/inversion-fair-value-gaps-ifvg/) handles that behavior specifically.

### How is access handled?

The indicator is free on the LuxAlgo Library. It can even be backtested in Quant, our coding agent, without leaving this page. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
