# Inertial RSI

Inertial RSI is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

An RSI that smooths itself at the source: every bar tests each lookback between your minimum and maximum lengths and keeps the one changing least from the prior reading. The forced-persistence output holds momentum states cleanly, with 50-centerline coloring, a dotted signal line and gradient fill for traders who find the classic oscillator too jumpy.

**Inertial RSI** rebuilds the [Relative Strength Index](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/rsi/) around a forced-persistence engine. Instead of committing to one fixed lookback, it tests every integer length between your Minimum and Maximum settings on each bar and keeps the candidate that lands closest to the previous final reading. Smoothing therefore happens at the source of the calculation, not through lag-heavy filters bolted on afterward, producing a steadier oscillator that holds its momentum state until price genuinely earns a change.

## How to Trade the Inertial RSI?

- **Hold above 50**: bullish momentum in control. The gradient fill makes sustained holds easy to spot for trend continuation.
- **Hold below 50**: bearish pressure dominant, supporting a short-side bias.
- **Cross above the dotted signal line**: improving momentum, strongest when it agrees with the centerline side (above 50 for longs, below for shorts).
- **60/40 extremes**: the default overbought and oversold levels (both adjustable), with a triangle on the price chart when the line exits either zone; transitions in and out arrive more smoothly, helping separate true extremes from noise.

As with any oscillator, these reads earn more trust alongside market structure, support and resistance, or trend analysis than in isolation.

## Inertial RSI Settings

- **Minimum Length**: the shortest RSI lookback the optimization may test, the floor of the search range.
- **Maximum Length**: the longest available lookback; a wider min-to-max range adapts across more conditions at some processing cost.
- **RSI Smoothing**: a final SMA pass over the inertial output for a cleaner line.
- **Signal Line Length**: the SMA length behind the dotted signal line.
- **Show Gradient Fill**: toggles the momentum fill between the RSI and the 50 centerline, with bullish and bearish colors adjustable.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How does this differ from a standard RSI?
A standard RSI is locked to one lookback. The Inertial RSI re-selects its lookback every bar to minimize the change from the prior value, computing each candidate with Wilder-consistent RMA math, so it reads like a familiar RSI with far less sawtooth behavior.

### Is there a stochastic version of this engine?
Yes. The [Inertial Stochastic](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/inertial-stochastic/) applies the same forced-persistence optimization to a stochastic oscillator, for traders who prefer range-position momentum over strength ratios.

### How do I access the Inertial RSI?
It costs nothing: the indicator lives in the LuxAlgo Library and can be tested in Quant, our coding agent, directly from this page. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
