Moving Averages

The Moving Averages Refurbished indicator provides a comprehensive collection of over 50 moving average types, allowing users to plot multiple configurable averages simultaneously to create a "rainbow" effect for trend analysis. This tool consolidates various technical smoothing methods into a single interface, offering flexibility in calculation types, periods, and visual themes.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to visualize market trends through multiple layers of smoothing. Users can select from 11 different moving average slots, each of which can be toggled on or off and customized individually.

  • Uniform Parameters: By enabling the "Same parameters for all moving averages?" setting, users can force all active lines to use the same calculation type (e.g., Jurik, HMA, or ALMA) and source, while maintaining different periods to see how a specific formula reacts across timeframes.
  • Predefined Periods: The script includes a "Predefined Periods" setting to quickly set up common sequences such as Fibonacci (3, 5, 8, 13, etc.), Arithmetic progressions, or the "Traditional" set (8, 21, 50, 100, 200).
  • Visual Interpretation: The coloring logic can be adjusted to change based on whether price is above the average or whether a faster average is above a slower one. This helps in identifying trend direction and momentum exhaustion.

Details

The script executes by pulling various calculation methods into a unified framework. It includes standard averages like SMA and EMA, as well as complex adaptive filters and volume-weighted variations.

Key technical concepts included:

  • Adaptive Filters: Includes KAMA, FRAMA, and MAMA, which adjust their sensitivity based on market volatility or fractal dimension.
  • Volume Weighting: Options like EVWMA and Rolling VWAP incorporate volume data to provide price levels weighted by trading activity.
  • Smoothing Techniques: Specialized algorithms like the Jurik Moving Average, Tillson T3, and ALMA are included to reduce lag while maintaining smoothness.
  • Fixed Period Averages: Certain types, such as VWAP or Symmetrically Weighted Moving Average, operate on fixed or anchored calculation windows regardless of the global period setting.

Settings

General Settings

  • Same parameters for all moving averages?: When checked, the type, source, and offset applied in the global section affect all active averages.
  • Type: Selects the mathematical formula used for the moving averages (over 50 options available).
  • Source: The price data used for calculation (Close, Open, HL2, etc.).
  • Predefined Periods: Allows selecting between user-defined lengths or automated sequences like Fibonacci or Arithmetic steps.

Calculation Parameters

  • ALMA Offset/Sigma: Controls the Gaussian distribution for the Arnaud Legoux Moving Average to adjust sharpness and alignment.
  • Jurik Phase/Power: Adjusts the overshoot and smoothing characteristics of the Jurik Moving Average.
  • Lambda: A regularization factor for the Regularized Exponential Moving Average (REGMA).
  • Rolling VWAP Settings: Configures the time window (Days/Hours/Minutes) for volume-weighted calculations if the fixed period mode is enabled.

Visuals and Colors

  • Coloring based on: Defines the logic for color transitions (Price vs. Average or Average vs. Next Average).
  • Theme Selection: Provides various color palettes (Classic, Rainbow, Monochrome) to distinguish between the different plotted lines.

FAQ

How do I change the number of moving averages on my chart? You can enable or disable specific averages by checking or unchecking the "Moving Average #" boxes in the indicator settings menu.

Can I use this for crossover strategies? Yes, by setting different periods (e.g., 50 and 200) and using the "Moving average is below or above the next moving average" coloring mode, you can visually identify crossovers.

How can I access the Moving Averages Refurbished indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
