# Long Wick Detector

Long Wick Detector is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

Flags candles whose wicks stretch beyond a volatility threshold you set, marking the exact levels where price was rejected hardest. Each long-wick level is tracked as mitigated or unmitigated and candles recolor as levels come into play, building a live map of rejection zones for reversal, supply-and-demand, and liquidity-grab setups.

**Long Wick Detector** isolates the candles that show genuine rejection: those whose wicks extend beyond a user-defined volatility threshold, the same anatomy that makes a [pin bar](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/pin-bar/) worth watching. Each qualifying wick leaves a level on the chart, candle colors shift with wick size and level interactions, and levels stay visible for up to 1,000 bars.

Long wicks tend to mark strong market reactions (failed breakouts, supply and demand imbalances, aggressive rejections), which is why the levels they leave behind become natural reference points for future trades.

## How to Trade the Long Wick Detector?

- **Unmitigated wick level**: price has not returned since the rejection; if it revisits, watch for a potential reaction there.
- **Mitigated wick level**: already tested by subsequent price action. The classification follows standard [level-interaction rules](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/level-interaction-rules/), so you always know which zones remain untested.
- **Wick through a key level that reverses at once**: a candidate liquidity grab or failed breakout, strongest with volume or order-block confluence behind it.
- **Threshold discipline**: a low threshold surfaces even minor deviations, while a high one keeps only the most significant rejections.

## Long Wick Detector Settings

- **Wick Threshold**: defines what counts as a long wick relative to recent volatility. Lower it to capture more rejection events; raise it to filter down to the formations that matter for your style, from scalping through swing horizons.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between mitigated and unmitigated levels?

An unmitigated level has not been revisited since its wick formed, so the reaction that created it remains untested. A mitigated level has already interacted with price, meaning part of its influence has likely been spent.

### Can it help me identify liquidity grabs?

Yes. A long wick punching through a prior high or low and reversing is the classic grab signature. Pairing it with [Liquidity Sweeps](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/liquidity-sweeps/) lets you confirm the wick actually raided a tracked liquidity level.

### How can I start using the Long Wick Detector?

It is free on the LuxAlgo Library, and this page is all you need. You can also send it straight into Quant, our coding agent, and test wick-rejection ideas without any setup. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
