Logarithmic Volume Profile
Jul 12, 2022

The Logarithmic Volume Profile indicator provides a specialized volume analysis tool that maps trading activity over a specified lookback period using logarithmic scaling to better visualize relative volume distribution across price levels. This tool helps traders identify high-volume nodes and potential support or resistance zones more effectively on assets with large price swings.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify key areas of market interest. The indicator generates a volume profile on the right side of the chart, allowing users to see where the majority of trading activity has occurred within the primary and secondary lookback periods.
- Identifying Value Areas: Traders can use the horizontal bars to find price levels with the most significant volume (high-volume nodes), which often act as magnets for price or strong support/resistance.
- Dual-Period Analysis: By enabling the secondary period, users can see a "tapered" volume influence, where older data is weighted less than recent data, providing a more dynamic view of evolving market interest.
- Bull/Bear Sentiment: The indicator can display bull/bear volume splits, helping users visualize whether buyers or sellers were more aggressive at specific price levels.
- Moving Average Integration: The tool includes five customizable moving averages and a "MA Cloud" to provide additional trend context alongside the volume data.
Details
The script calculates volume distribution by dividing the price range into a user-defined number of rows. Unlike standard volume profiles, this version uses logarithmic considerations to handle price scaling.
The weighting mechanism is a core feature:
- Primary Lookback: Bars within this range are given equal weight (100%).
- Secondary Lookback: If enabled, bars in this additional period have their weight linearly tapered from 100% (at the edge of the primary period) down to 0% (at the start of the secondary period). This ensures that very old volume data does not disproportionately skew the current profile.
The script also includes a sophisticated Moving Average Cloud based on five different lengths. The cloud color shifts based on how many of these averages are trending upward, providing a visual filter for trend strength.
Settings
Volume Profile Settings
- VP primary lookback period: Sets the number of recent bars where volume is fully weighted.
- Use Secondary Period: Enables an additional lookback window with tapered weighting.
- VP secondary (additional) lookback period: The length of the tapered weighting window.
- VP number of rows: Determines the vertical resolution of the volume profile.
- VP width of indicator left: Controls the horizontal span and rounding accuracy of the profile lines.
- VP Left Color 1 & 2: Customizes the primary colors of the volume bars.
- VP show bull bear to right?: Toggles the display of buy vs. sell volume distribution.
- VP offset from last candle: Adjusts the horizontal position of the profile to avoid overlapping with recent price action.
- Show ranges: Toggles the visibility of price range borders.
Other Indicators (MAs)
- MA 1 - 5 Plot: Toggles individual moving averages.
- Type: Selects the calculation method (SMA, EMA, WMA, VWAP, etc.).
- Source: Chooses the price data source, including Heikin-Ashi options.
- Length: Sets the period for the moving average calculation.
- 5MA Cloud: Toggles the multi-MA trend cloud.
- Cloud Channel: Displays an ATR-based envelope around the MA cloud.
FAQ
How do I interpret the tapered volume in the secondary period? The secondary period applies a linear decay to volume weights. A bar at the very start of the secondary period contributes almost nothing to the profile, while a bar right next to the primary period contributes nearly its full volume.
Can I use this for intraday scalping? Yes, by adjusting the lookback periods and the number of rows, you can fine-tune the profile to show high-frequency nodes relevant to shorter timeframes.
How do I access the Logarithmic Volume Profile? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
