Moving Averages

The Jurik Moving Average tool provides a high-performance trend-following filter designed to offer low lag and reduced noise compared to traditional moving averages. Traders use this tool to identify market direction with greater precision, benefiting from its ability to stay close to price action while maintaining a smooth output.

Usage

The Jurik Moving Average (JMA) can be used as a primary trend filter or a signal generator for entries and exits. Because of its advanced smoothing algorithm, it reacts faster to price reversals than a Simple Moving Average (SMA) or Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of the same length, making it effective for:

  • Trend Identification: When the JMA is sloping upwards, it indicates a bullish trend; a downward slope indicates a bearish trend.
  • Crossovers: Traders often look for price crosses above or below the JMA line to signal potential trend shifts.
  • Dynamic Support and Resistance: The line often acts as a trailing level where price may find temporary support or resistance during a strong trend.

The "Highlight Movements" setting provides immediate visual feedback by changing the color of the plot based on whether the JMA is rising or falling, assisting in trend bias confirmation.

Details

Originally developed by Mark Jurik, the JMA is a proprietary smoothing algorithm. Unlike standard filters that often suffer from significant overshoot or extreme lag when trying to eliminate noise, the JMA utilizes a complex multi-stage calculation.

The calculation involves three main components:

  1. Volatility Adaptation: It adjusts its responsiveness based on market volatility to avoid being "whiplashed" during sideways price action.
  2. Phase Adjustment: This parameter allows the user to control the tradeoff between lag and overshoot.
  3. Power Factor: This affects the curvature and responsiveness of the smoothing, allowing for further customization of the filter's behavior relative to the price source.

Settings

  • Length: Determines the window of time used for the calculation. Higher values result in a smoother line with more lag, while lower values are more responsive.
  • Phase: Controls the tradeoff between lag and overshoot. Values typically range from -100 to 100.
  • Power: Adjusts the mathematical power applied to the internal alpha calculation, affecting the smoothness and reactivity of the average.
  • Source: Specifies the price data used for the calculation (e.g., Open, High, Low, Close).
  • Highlight Movements: A toggle to enable or disable color changes on the plot based on the directional slope of the JMA.

FAQ

How does the Jurik Moving Average differ from an EMA? The JMA uses a more sophisticated multi-stage smoothing process that significantly reduces lag while maintaining a smooth line, whereas an EMA relies on a single weighting factor that can often lag behind sharp price movements.

What is the best Phase setting to use? The Phase setting is subjective; a value of 0 is standard, while higher positive values reduce lag at the cost of potential overshoot, and negative values increase smoothing.
