# Neighboring Trailing Stop

The Neighboring Trailing Stop builds a ratcheting stop-loss from the local distribution of recent prices, using k-nearest neighbors selection and a percentile filter instead of ATR multiples. Green and red regimes track trend direction while B and S labels mark structural reversals: a data-driven exit engine for swing, intraday, and systematic traders.

**Neighboring Trailing Stop** places its stop where price has actually clustered, sidestepping the volatility multiples behind most [trailing stop designs](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/trailing-method-taxonomy/). Each bar, the indicator ranks recent prices in a sorted buffer, applies [k-nearest neighbors](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/knn-analog-forecasting/) logic to pull the closest values above and below the current level, and sets the stop at a chosen percentile of that neighborhood, smoothed with an SMA, then ratcheted so the stop only steps with the trade, never against it.

## How to Trade the Neighboring Trailing Stop?

- **Green stop below price**: bullish regime: the level only steps upward as higher price clusters form, locking gains in behind the trend.
- **Red stop above price**: bearish regime: the level only steps down, tracking short positions lower.
- **B and S labels**: print when price escapes its neighboring distribution boundary, flagging a structural reversal.

Because the boundaries come from genuine congestion instead of a fixed multiplier, the stop is built to sit through orderly pullbacks and give way when the local distribution itself breaks. That makes it usable three ways: as a standalone trend read, as a dynamic stop-loss overlay, or as confirmation beside structure-based entries.

## Neighboring Trailing Stop Settings

- **Historical Buffer (Bars)**: how many prices stay in memory. Larger buffers steady the stop, smaller ones make it react faster.
- **Neighboring Range (K)**: how many neighbors are sampled on each side of the current price; small K tracks local fluctuation, large K frames broader structural zones.
- **Percentile**: how deep into the neighborhood the stop sits. Higher grants breathing room and fewer whipsaws, lower tightens it for quicker reversals.
- **Smoothing (SMA)**: averages the raw distribution levels into a clean trailing line.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How is this different from an ATR-based trailing stop?

ATR methods such as [Supertrend](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/supertrend/) size the stop from average volatility, so it breathes with range regardless of structure. The Neighboring Trailing Stop anchors to the levels where price has recently found acceptance, reacting to shifts in the distribution instead of raw volatility.

### Can it run as a standalone system?

It plots its own B and S reversal labels, so it can drive a simple trend-following ruleset on its own. Many traders will instead keep it in the trade-management seat, pairing the ratcheted stop with entries from another tool.

### Does the Neighboring Trailing Stop cost anything?

No. It is free through the LuxAlgo Library. From this page you can also run it in Quant, our coding agent, and backtest how the labels behave on your market. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
