CM EMA Trend Bars
Nov 2, 2014

The CM EMA Trend Bars indicator provides a visual trend-following framework by coloring price bars based on their position relative to an Exponential Moving Average (EMA). It aims to simplify trend identification and filter market noise by using an average price calculation to determine bullish or bearish states.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market direction. The primary application is to determine the current trend bias at a glance: green bars signify an uptrend where price action is holding above the EMA, while red bars indicate a downtrend where price action is below the EMA.
Users can utilize the indicator to:
- Trend Identification: Confirm the prevailing market direction before entering a trade.
- Exit Signal: Identify potential trend exhaustion or reversals when the bar color shifts.
- Filter: Avoid trading against the primary trend by only taking long positions during green bar sequences and short positions during red bar sequences.
Details
The indicator calculates a standard Exponential Moving Average based on a user-defined period. Unlike many trend indicators that use only the closing price to determine a crossover, this script utilizes the hlc3 (High + Low + Close / 3) price source. By using the average price of the bar, the indicator effectively filters out "choppy" price action and reduces the frequency of false breakouts that often occur when using the closing price alone.
The visual output includes both the bar coloring and an optional EMA line plot that changes color dynamically to match the trend state. Alerts are integrated to trigger upon a trend change (cross over or under), facilitating real-time monitoring.
Settings
- EMA UpTrend: Sets the length or period of the Exponential Moving Average used to define the trend (Default is 34).
- Show EMA Trend is Based On?: A toggle to display or hide the EMA line on the chart.
FAQ
How do I adjust the sensitivity of the trend detection? You can adjust the "EMA UpTrend" setting; a lower value will make the indicator more sensitive to short-term price movements, while a higher value will focus on long-term trends and provide more smoothing.
Why does the trend color sometimes change even if the close is below the EMA?
The indicator uses the hlc3 price (the average of high, low, and close) rather than just the close. This means if the high and low are significantly higher than the EMA, the trend may remain bullish even if the closing price is slightly below it.
How can I access the CM EMA Trend Bars? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
