The RSI with EMA & VWMA indicator combines standard momentum tracking with volume-weighted and exponential moving averages to identify trend shifts and intraday trading opportunities.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the relationship between the three main components: the RSI line, the Volume Weighted Moving Average (VWMA) of the RSI, and the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of the RSI.

  • Trend Identification: The crossover between the short-term EMA and the longer-term VWMA serves as a primary signal for momentum shifts. A fill color is often used between these two averages to highlight the current trend direction.
  • Median Support/Resistance: Unlike traditional RSI levels (70/30), this tool defaults to a 50 level as a median. Staying above 50 suggests a bullish bias, while staying below 50 suggests a bearish bias.
  • Intraday Trading: The 3-period EMA is designed to react quickly to price changes, making it suitable for capturing fast-moving intraday trends when used in conjunction with the slower VWMA.

Details

This script enhances the standard Relative Strength Index (RSI) by applying moving averages directly to the RSI values rather than the price. This smoothing process helps filter out market noise and provides a clearer picture of momentum velocity.

  • RSI: Measures the speed and change of price movements.
  • VWMA: Incorporates volume data into the RSI smoothing, providing a "weighted" look at where the majority of momentum is concentrated.
  • EMA: Provides a faster, exponentially weighted average of the RSI to detect early reversals.

Settings

  • RSI Period: Sets the lookback period for the base RSI calculation (Default: 9).
  • RSI VWMA Period: Determines the length of the Volume Weighted Moving Average applied to the RSI (Default: 21).
  • RSI EMA Period: Determines the length of the Exponential Moving Average applied to the RSI (Default: 3).
  • RSI Bull Trend Support: Sets the horizontal level used to identify bullish support (Default: 50).
  • RSI Bear Trend Resistance: Sets the horizontal level used to identify bearish resistance (Default: 50).

FAQ

How do I use the 50 level for trading?

The 50 level acts as a pivot. When the RSI and its moving averages hold above 50, the market is considered in a bullish phase. Conversely, holding below 50 indicates a bearish phase.

What do the EMA and VWMA crossovers signify?

An EMA crossing above the VWMA indicates that short-term momentum is accelerating faster than the volume-weighted average, often signaling a buy opportunity. A cross under signals slowing momentum or a potential sell.
