The Moving Average Colored EMA/SMA indicator provides a visual trend-following tool by plotting Exponential (EMA) and Simple (SMA) Moving Averages that dynamically change color based on their directional slope.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and momentum shifts. By default, the indicator displays a colored EMA while the SMA remains hidden, though both can be toggled independently.

  • Trend Identification: The primary application is to identify the current trend direction at a glance. When the moving average is rising (bullish momentum), the line turns green. When the moving average is falling (bearish momentum), the line turns red.
  • Support and Resistance: Traders can use the colored lines as dynamic support or resistance levels. A color change from red to green at a key level may indicate a potential reversal or breakout.
  • Filtering Trades: You can use the moving average color as a filter for your strategy; for example, only taking long positions when the EMA is green and short positions when it is red.
  • Alerts: The script includes built-in alert conditions that trigger when the EMA or SMA changes direction, allowing users to stay informed of trend shifts without constant monitoring.

Details

The script calculates two standard moving average types: the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and the Simple Moving Average (SMA). The core logic relies on comparing the current value of the moving average to its value on the previous bar.

If the current value is greater than the previous value, the slope is considered positive (bullish). If the current value is less than the previous value, the slope is considered negative (bearish). In cases where the value remains unchanged, the indicator defaults to the standard chart foreground color. The EMA is plotted with a thicker line (width 3) by default to distinguish it from the SMA (width 1). This script was originally authored by @repo32 and refactored for optimized performance and visual clarity.

Settings

  • Show EMA on chart: Toggles the visibility of the Exponential Moving Average.
  • EMA Length: Determines the lookback period used for the EMA calculation.
  • Show SMA on chart: Toggles the visibility of the Simple Moving Average.
  • SMA Length: Determines the lookback period used for the SMA calculation.

FAQ

Can I use the EMA and SMA at the same time?

Yes, both moving averages can be enabled simultaneously in the settings menu, allowing you to observe how different timeframes or calculation methods interact (e.g., using a fast EMA and a slow SMA).

How does the color logic work?

The color is determined by the direction of the moving average's slope. If the value of the MA is higher than the previous bar, it turns green; if it is lower, it turns red.
