# Point & Figure Cause Counting

Point & Figure Cause Counting is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

Automates the Wyckoff horizontal count on an internally built point & figure grid: ATR-sized boxes with a 3-box reversal by default, and congestions of at least five columns counted once a breakout resolves them. Posts conservative-to-aggressive objective zones, checks stepping-stone agreement against the campaign base, and previews the developing count before entry.

**Point & Figure Cause Counting** performs the Wyckoff horizontal count automatically, the first working build of [point & figure cause counting](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/point-and-figure-cause-counting/) in the library. It reconstructs a point & figure grid from the chart's bar history, and when a breakout resolves a congestion it draws the count line at the row crossing the most printed columns, multiplies columns by box size and reversal, and posts the projection as a zone: conservative edge anchored at the range extreme, aggressive edge at the count line.

## How to Trade the Point & Figure Cause Counting?

- **Count posted**: a congestion at least Minimum Range Width wide resolved; the "count N" label carries the full arithmetic in its tooltip.
- **Objective zone**: the shaded span between the two targets, an area where the projected effect is spent, not a precise level.
- **Stepping-stone**: a fresh count converging with the campaign base zone supports staying with the position; the dashboard grades each.
- **Developing preview**: the dotted range shows the pending count and both would-be objectives, the pre-entry check of whether the base projects far enough.

The build anchors the measuring side of the [Wyckoff toolkit](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/family/wyckoff/).

## Point & Figure Cause Counting Settings

- **Box Size Method** (default Auto (ATR)) with **ATR Length** (default 14); **Box Percent** (default 1) and **Fixed Box Size** (default 1) serve the manual modes.
- **Reversal (Boxes)** (default 3) and **Column Source** (default High/Low): grid construction.
- **Minimum Range Width (Columns)** (default 5), **Count Line Fill (%)** (default 60), **Breakout Threshold (Boxes)** (default 1): what qualifies as a countable cause.
- **Stepping-Stone Tolerance (%)** (default 10): slack when comparing a new count with the campaign base.
- **Calculation Window (Bars)** (default 2000) and **Completed Counts Kept** (default 4), plus dashboard and drawing toggles.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do I need a separate point & figure chart?

No. The grid is rebuilt internally from the chart's bar history, including the bar still forming, so the tool runs on an ordinary candle chart. A count, its objective zone and its alert can appear or change on the live bar until it closes. In the Auto (ATR) and Percent of Price modes the whole grid is also re-sized from the latest value on every update, so earlier counts and zones can shift or disappear as the box size changes; treat them as current estimates, not fixed marks. Pair it with the [Point & Figure](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/point-and-figure/) indicator when you want to see the columns behind each count.

### Are the objectives price targets?

They are estimates of potential, and they say nothing about timing. Counts are also sensitive to the box size, exactly why the output is a zone between two anchorings rather than one number.

### What does a divergent stepping-stone mean?

A pause whose count projects clearly away from the campaign base. It does not cancel the base count, but agreement is the confirmation Wyckoff readers look for. Without it, treat the objective with more caution.
