Coral Trend Indicator
Jan 14, 2015

The Coral Trend Indicator indicator provides a smoothed trend-following mechanism that visualizes market direction through a dynamic moving average-style filter. It identifies bullish and bearish regimes by processing price action through a multi-layered smoothing algorithm, allowing traders to filter out market noise and identify sustained price trends.
Usage
The Usage of the Coral Trend Indicator focuses on identifying trend shifts through color-coded visual cues. The script offers three primary display methods:
- Trend Mode: The default setting displays a circular plot on the chart. When the plot is green, the trend is considered bullish; when red, the trend is bearish. Traders often use the change in color as a signal for potential trend reversals.
- Ribbon Mode: By enabling this feature, the indicator removes the trend line from the main chart and instead applies a background color (ribbon) to the chart panes. This provides a clean visual representation of the current trend without cluttering price action.
- Overlay/Bar Color Mode: When "Color Bars" is enabled, the individual price candles are colored based on the Coral Trend status. In this mode, the main trend line typically turns gray to prioritize the visual data provided by the candle colors.
Traders can utilize these modes to confirm entries in the direction of the prevailing trend or to set trailing stop losses based on the indicator's level.
Details
The Coral Trend Indicator is a port of a popular technical analysis tool originally found on the MT4 platform. Unlike a standard Simple Moving Average (SMA) or Exponential Moving Average (EMA), the Coral Trend utilizes a more complex smoothing process involving six levels of internal buffers ($i1$ through $i6$).
The calculation relies on two primary variables: the Smoothing Period and Constant D. The algorithm applies a series of coefficients ($c1$ to $c5$) to the price source, creating a filtered output ($bfr$) that is less reactive to minor price fluctuations but remains responsive to significant trend changes. This construction aims to reduce "whipsaws" often found in traditional moving averages. When the current value of the Coral buffer is higher than the previous value, the trend is up; conversely, when it is lower, the trend is down.
Settings
- Smoothing Period: Determines the length used for the internal calculations. Higher values result in a smoother line with less sensitivity, while lower values make the indicator more responsive to recent price changes.
- Constant D: A coefficient that affects the curvature and smoothing intensity of the indicator. Adjusting this value fine-tunes how the algorithm reacts to price volatility.
- Color Bars: A toggle that, when enabled, paints the price bars according to the trend direction (green for bullish, red for bearish).
- Ribbon Mode: A toggle that replaces the trend line with a background color ribbon to represent the trend state across the chart.
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes in the Coral Trend Indicator? A change from red to green indicates that the price has begun an upward momentum shift, while a change from green to red indicates a downward momentum shift. These transitions are often used to signal potential entry or exit points.
Can I use this indicator for scalping or long-term trading? Yes, by adjusting the Smoothing Period. Scalpers may prefer lower smoothing values (e.g., 10-15) for faster signals, while swing traders or long-term investors may prefer higher values (e.g., 21-50) to capture broader market moves.
How can I access the Coral Trend Indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
