Moving Average MTF Live
Mar 21, 2020

The Moving Average MTF Live indicator provides a solution for visualizing real-time, non-repainting multi-timeframe moving averages by dynamically updating current period calculations to eliminate latency.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to monitor higher timeframe trends without the typical drawbacks of multi-timeframe (MTF) analysis. Traders often face a choice between latency (waiting for a higher timeframe candle to close) and repainting (using real-time data that changes historical values). This tool bridges that gap by providing a visual representation of the current higher timeframe (HTF) moving average state as it develops.
To use this indicator:
- Select a higher timeframe (e.g., 15-minute or 1-hour) while viewing a lower timeframe chart.
- Monitor the interaction between the Fast and Slow EMAs to identify trend shifts.
- Observe the "live" line segment, which represents the current unfinished HTF candle, updating dynamically with price action.
Details
The script addresses the technical limitations of the request.security function. In standard implementations, using historical data causes the indicator to lag behind current price action, while using real-time data causes the indicator to "repaint" or change its past values once the HTF candle closes.
This experimental script uses a hybrid approach. It plots historical values using confirmed data to maintain accuracy. For the current, incomplete HTF candle, it calculates the number of current timeframe bars that have elapsed and uses the line.new function to draw a live level. This level is deleted and redrawn on each new candle of the current timeframe, providing a real-time view of the HTF moving average without altering the confirmed historical plots.

Settings
- Timeframe: Determines the higher timeframe from which the moving averages are calculated. This should be set to a timeframe higher than the current chart.
- Fast Length: Sets the lookback period for the fast Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
- Slow Length: Sets the lookback period for the slow Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
FAQ
How does this prevent repainting? The script uses standard plotting for confirmed historical bars and dynamic line objects for the current developing timeframe, ensuring that historical values remain fixed while the current value reflects live price movement.
Why are lines used instead of standard plots for the current bar? Standard plots in Pine Script cannot retroactively change their values within a specific period once drawn. By using lines, the script can update the visual representation of the higher timeframe average across multiple lower timeframe candles.
