# Sweep Volume Index

Sweep Volume Index is an indicator on [Vela](https://vela.luxalgo.com/chart), our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.

An oscillator measuring the volume traded specifically during liquidity sweeps, summing the volume of intrabars that reach beyond a swept swing high or low. Heavy sweep volume exposes stop-runs and possible absorption; light sweeps hint at unopposed continuation. Decaying envelopes frame every spike against recent sweep history.

**Sweep Volume Index** measures what ordinary volume hides: how much actually traded beyond a swing level during [liquidity sweeps](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/liquidity-sweep/). Using intrabar data, it sums the volume of lower-timeframe bars that trade past a pivot high or low while the candle body fails to hold beyond an ATR-based threshold (sweep volume, not candle volume) and plots it as an oscillator. Bullish columns tally activity above swept highs, bearish columns below swept lows, and decaying envelopes frame each spike against recent sweep history.

## How to Trade the Sweep Volume Index?

- **Heavy sweep plus rejection**: a large spike as price pierces a level but closes back inside suggests liquidity was collected and absorbed, a reversal setup worth confirming with structure or momentum.
- **Light sweep on a break**: low sweep volume implies the level was cleared with little opposition, which can precede faster continuation.
- **Rising volume, shrinking progress**: successive sweeps with growing sweep volume but smaller price extension hint at trend exhaustion.
- **Envelopes as baseline**: judge each spike against the decaying envelopes to see whether sweep activity is out of the ordinary.

Explicit [sweep detection](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/sweep-detection/) rules (pivot, threshold zone, intrabar count) keep the plotted values strictly sweep-specific.

## Sweep Volume Index Settings

- **Pivot Length**: lookback and lookahead for structural swing highs and lows; higher values isolate more significant swings.
- **Intrabar Timeframe**: the lower timeframe used for granular volume; lower is more precise but needs sufficient chart history.
- **Use ATR Threshold / ATR Length / ATR Multiplier**: define the buffer zone in which a pierce still counts as a sweep. Larger multipliers qualify more moves.
- **Envelope Alpha %**: how slowly the envelopes decay; higher values keep them elevated longer.
- Visual toggles cover on-chart swing levels, oscillator fills, and all colors.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does it need a lower timeframe?

The calculation adds up the volume of the lower-timeframe bars that reached beyond the pivot during the sweep, a detail the chart's own resolution cannot show. Intrabar data supplies that granularity, so make sure the chart carries enough history for the timeframe you select.

### What pairs well with it?

[Buyside & Sellside Liquidity](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/buyside-sellside-liquidity/) is a natural partner: it maps where liquidity rests, while the Sweep Volume Index quantifies what trades when those levels are run. Together they cover the where and the how much of sweep analysis.

### How do I get the Sweep Volume Index?

It's free from the LuxAlgo Library; send it into Quant, our coding agent, from this page to study historical sweeps on your preferred symbols. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
