The Moving Average Crossover Swing Strategy indicator provides a comprehensive framework for multi-day swing trading by generating signals from customizable moving average crossovers combined with momentum and trend confirmation. It offers a structured approach to entry and exit through ATR-based risk management, trend-following filters, and time-based early exit criteria.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify swing trading opportunities. The strategy generates a long signal when a faster moving average crosses over a medium-period moving average, and a short signal when it crosses under.

Entry Confirmation

To filter out noise, users can enable additional confirmation layers:

  • Slow MA Filter: Requires the candle to close above (for longs) or below (for shorts) a longer-period moving average.
  • MACD Confirmation: Validates the entry signal with a MACD crossover/cross-under. Users can specify if the MACD cross must occur above or below the zero line for added precision.

Exit Strategies

The script includes three distinct exit mechanisms to protect capital and lock in profits:

  1. ATR Targets: Automatic stop loss and take profit levels are calculated based on the Average True Range (ATR) at the time of entry.
  2. MA Cross Exit: An optional early exit that triggers if the signal moving averages cross back in the opposite direction, suggesting a momentum shift.
  3. Time-Based Exit: A "Max Bars in Trade" setting that closes positions after a fixed number of bars to prevent capital from being tied up in non-trending markets.

Details

The script is built on the interaction between trend-following (Moving Averages) and momentum-based (MACD) indicators.

Risk Management Logic

The strategy uses a sophisticated position-sizing formula that selects the smaller of two values to ensure risk remains within bounds:

  • Max Cash Risk: Calculates shares based on the dollar amount at risk (e.g., 1% of total equity) relative to the distance between the entry price and the ATR stop loss.
  • Max Equity Allocation: Calculates shares based on a fixed percentage of total equity (e.g., 25% of the account).

Visualizations

The script utilizes "Clouds" between specific moving average pairs (e.g., MA 1a and MA 1b) to visually represent the strength of the trend. These visual components can be toggled independently of the calculation logic.
