# Ultimate RSI

The Ultimate RSI reworks the classic Relative Strength Index into a trend-first oscillator, weighting price changes by the rolling range so overbought and oversold readings arrive sooner and hold through strong moves. With four smoothing methods, a signal line, and colored trend zones, it suits trend followers who find the standard RSI too noisy.

The **Ultimate RSI** is LuxAlgo's trend-first rebuild of the [Relative Strength Index](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/rsi/). Instead of weighting every price change equally, it substitutes the rolling range into the calculation, so movement that prints new highs or lows counts for more. The oscillator reaches overbought and oversold faster, holds those zones through sustained moves, and crosses its 50 midline less often than the classic version, an [adaptive RSI design](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/adaptive-dynamic-rsi/) built for trend traders rather than contrarians.

## How to Trade the Ultimate RSI?

- **Cross above the overbought threshold**: momentum strong enough to signal a robust uptrend, highlighted as a green area.
- **Cross below the oversold threshold**: a potent downtrend, marked in red.
- **50 midline position**: above 50 favors upside, below 50 downside, and fewer midline crossings mean fewer false direction flips.
- **Signal line alignment**: the oscillator above its signal line indicates a strengthening trend; below it, momentum is fading.

Where the standard oscillator punishes trend followers by tagging its thresholds and snapping back, the Ultimate RSI is designed to sustain extreme readings: overbought becomes strength to follow, not an automatic fade.

## Ultimate RSI Settings

- **Length**: the calculation period, which also sets the window used to assess new highs and lows.
- **Method**: smoothing method for the oscillator: EMA, SMA, RMA, or TMA, ranked from most reactive to smoothest.
- **Source**: the input series the oscillator runs on.
- **Smooth**: degree of smoothing applied to the signal line.
- **Method (signal line)**: the smoothing method used for the signal line.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How is the Ultimate RSI different from the standard RSI?

The classic formulation averages all price changes, which makes it whipsaw around its thresholds during strong trends. By weighting changes with the rolling range as new extremes print, the Ultimate RSI extends its readings and holds them longer. If you'd rather read the classic calculation across many lookbacks at once, [RSI Multi-Length](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/indicator/rsi-multi-length/) offers that aggregate view.

### Which smoothing method should I choose?

EMA is the most reactive and TMA the smoothest, with SMA and RMA between them. Faster methods flag turns earlier but wobble more; smoother ones cut the noise but answer later. The same choice is available separately for the signal line.

### Is the Ultimate RSI free to use?

Yes. It is one of the free LuxAlgo originals in the Library, and you can run and backtest it with Quant, our coding agent, directly from this page. You can also copy the source code from this page and run it anywhere Pine Script® runs.
