The RedK Trader Pressure Index (TPX) indicator analyzes price bar fluctuations to visualize the competition between buyers and sellers, determining which side maintains market control to assist in trend identification and trade timing.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market sentiment and potential trend strength. The indicator is primarily used to distinguish between trending environments and "no-trade" zones where market interest is lacking.

  • Trend Identification: When the Bull Pressure (green area) or Bear Pressure (red area) exceeds the user-defined Control Level, it indicates a dominant side is in control. Traders often look for these values to stay above the threshold to confirm a well-supported move.
  • Net Pressure Analysis: The Net Pressure line (TPX) fluctuates around a zero baseline. A cross above zero indicates bullish momentum, while a cross below suggests bearish momentum.
  • Exhaustion and Sideways Markets: If both Bull and Bear pressure lines remain below the Control Level, it typically signifies a lack of conviction from both sides, suggesting a consolidation phase or a "no-trade" zone.
  • Signal Visualization: If enabled, the script can plot "Hot" (crosses) or "Cold" (circles) signals when pressure levels exceed specific thresholds, providing immediate visual cues for trend dominance.

Details

The TPX operates on the assumption that buyers and sellers compete to move the price range. Bullish pressure is quantified by the upward movement of both the high and low of a price bar relative to the previous bar. Conversely, bearish pressure is quantified by the downward movement of the high and low.

Unlike complex oscillators, the TPX uses the relative change in the two-bar range as its core logic. The calculation normalizes these movements into a percentage (capped at 100% to account for large gaps) and applies a Weighted Moving Average (WMA) to smooth the data. The "Net Pressure" is the difference between these two averages, providing a smoothed representation of the prevailing market bias.

Settings

  • Avg Length: The period used for the initial Weighted Moving Average calculation of bull and bear pressures.
  • Smoothing: The lookback period for the final smoothing of the Net Pressure (TPX) line.
  • Control Level: A horizontal threshold (defaulting at 30) used to identify when a specific pressure group has reached a dominant state.
  • Pre-smoothing?: A toggle to apply an additional layer of smoothing to the raw pressure values before the main calculations.
  • Pressure Signal Line?: A toggle to display visual markers (Hot/Cold) on the chart when pressure exceeds a specific signal level.

FAQ

How do I interpret the Net Pressure line color? The Net Pressure line changes brightness based on its position relative to the zero level. A solid color indicates positive net pressure (bullish), while a faded color indicates negative net pressure (bearish).

What is the significance of the Control Level? The Control Level acts as a momentum threshold. Pressure values above this line suggest that the move is backed by significant participation, whereas values below it suggest weak or unconvincing price action.
