Delta Zones Buy/Sell Pressure
Oct 14, 2023

The Delta Zones Buy/Sell Pressure indicator identifies key areas of intense buying and selling activity by calculating price-based delta and highlighting zones where these values exceed user-defined standard deviation thresholds. This tool provides visual support for detecting supply and demand shifts directly on the price chart.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market imbalances. When the calculated delta exceeds the standard deviation threshold, the indicator plots colored boxes that represent zones of high pressure.
- Green Boxes: These represent areas of significant buying pressure. Traders often look for long entries when price interacts with these zones or when a new zone is formed during an uptrend.
- Red Boxes: These represent areas of significant selling pressure. These zones can be used to identify potential short positions or areas where price might face resistance.
- Zone Breaches: If the "Delete Box When Price Breaks Zone" setting is enabled, zones will vanish once the price closes beyond the zone’s boundaries, indicating that the pressure area has been neutralized.
- Higher Timeframe (HTF) Analysis: Users can overlay zones from a higher timeframe (e.g., 60m zones on a 5m chart) to identify "macro" areas of interest that may carry more weight than local intraday zones.
Details
The script calculates "Delta" by evaluating the relationship between the open, close, high, and low of each candle. Specifically, it compares the distance between the open/low and high/close to determine the dominant pressure.
To filter out market noise, the script applies a Standard Deviation filter. A zone is only generated if the delta value is significantly higher (based on the user-defined multiplier) than the average delta over the lookback period. Unlike traditional volume-based delta oscillators, this tool projects these calculations as horizontal price zones, allowing for better visualization of historical support and resistance levels created by aggressive market participants.
The script also includes an optional ZigZag overlay to help traders visualize market structure and price action trends alongside the delta zones.
Settings
1. Delta Zones — General
- Standard Deviation: The multiplier used to determine the sensitivity of the zones. Higher values result in fewer, more significant zones.
- Standard Deviation Lookback: The number of bars used to calculate the average delta volatility.
2. Delta Zones — Current TF Boxes
- Show Buy/Sell Boxes: Toggles the visibility of the pressure zones.
- Box Colors/Borders: Customizes the visual appearance of the zones.
- Max Boxes Visible: Limits the number of active zones displayed on the chart to prevent clutter.
- Delete Box When Price Breaks Zone: When enabled, removes the box if the price closes through the zone.
3. HTF Boxes — Activation & Appearance
- Enable HTF Boxes: Allows the display of delta zones from a higher timeframe.
- Higher Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for HTF calculations (e.g., "1D" or "240").
- Hide Current On HTF: Hides the current timeframe boxes when HTF boxes are active for a cleaner view.
- HTF Labels: Toggles text labels that identify the timeframe and direction of the HTF zone.
4. ZigZag — Price Action
- Enable ZigZag Lines: Toggles the market structure lines.
- Depth/Deviation/Backstep: Standard parameters for the ZigZag algorithm to determine pivot points.
- Repaint Lines: Determines if the ZigZag lines update dynamically or only on bar close.
FAQ
How do I interpret a zone being deleted? If a zone is deleted upon a price close beyond its boundary (if the setting is enabled), it suggests that the previous buying or selling pressure at that level has been overcome by the opposing side, potentially signaling a trend reversal or continuation.
Can I use this for scalping and swing trading? Yes. By adjusting the "Standard Deviation" and the "Higher Timeframe" settings, the indicator can be tuned to capture short-term momentum for scalping or significant structural levels for swing trading.
How can I access the Delta Zones Buy/Sell Pressure indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
