Variety Step RSI w/ Dynamic Zones
Jul 16, 2023

The Variety Step RSI w/ Dynamic Zones indicator provides a stepped RSI calculation featuring Discontinued Signal Lines (DSL) to help traders identify momentum shifts and refine entry/exit points. By offering seven distinct RSI types and a specialized stepped moving average mechanism, this tool aims to provide a more responsive and smoother alternative to traditional RSI oscillators.
Usage
The indicator can be used to identify trend reversals and momentum shifts through the interaction between the RSI line and the dynamic zones (DSL levels).
- Long Signals: Occur when the RSI crosses above the upper green level.
- Short Signals: Occur when the RSI crosses below the lower red level.
- Neutral Zones: When the RSI is between the upper and lower levels, the market is often considered to be in a transitional or range-bound state.
Traders can utilize the "Step Size" parameter to control how sensitive the stepped moving average is to price fluctuations. A larger step size will create broader, more stable steps, while a smaller size will follow the RSI more closely.
Details
This script implements a "Stepped Moving Average" which adjusts based on trend changes. Unlike a standard moving average that follows price linearly, the stepped version calculates upper and lower bounds based on the RSI value and a defined step size. When the RSI breaks these bounds, a new "step" is formed, helping to filter out minor noise.
The Discontinued Signal Lines (DSL) further enhance this by creating dynamic levels. Instead of a single static signal line, the DSL inherits previous smoothed values when levels are crossed in specific directions. This creates a "level-based" signal line that effectively combines the benefits of trend-following lines and horizontal support/resistance levels.

FAQ
How do I access Variety Step RSI w/ Dynamic Zones?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
What is the advantage of using a Stepped RSI?
Stepped RSI reduces "market noise" by requiring a specific threshold (the step size) to be met before the trend signal updates. This results in cleaner signals and fewer whipsaws compared to a standard RSI.
What do the different RSI types do?
The different types (like RSX or Ehlers Smoothed) apply various pre-processing or post-processing smoothing techniques to the relative strength calculation, allowing users to choose between higher sensitivity or better lag reduction.
