RSI Donchian Channels
Apr 5, 2015

The RSI Donchian Channels indicator tracks momentum volatility by applying Donchian Channel logic to the Relative Strength Index (RSI), allowing traders to identify strong trending phases and exhaustion points.
Usage
The Usage of this tool focuses on identifying periods of high momentum. Traders typically look for the RSI to "hug" the upper or lower Donchian Channel envelopes during strong trends.
- Bullish Trend: In a strong uptrend, the RSI will often reach and stay along the upper Donchian Channel boundary. A potential exit or reversal signal may occur when the RSI releases from this upper envelope.
- Bearish Trend: In a strong downtrend, the RSI will often trail along the lower Donchian Channel boundary. When the RSI pulls away from the lower boundary, it may indicate a loss of downward momentum.
- Mean Reversion: The basis (middle line) represents the average of the highest and lowest RSI values over the lookback period, serving as a dynamic mid-point for the oscillator's current range.
Details
This script combines two classic technical analysis concepts: the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Donchian Channels. While Donchian Channels are traditionally applied to price to identify breakouts, applying them to the RSI highlights the "extremes" of momentum rather than just price.
The indicator calculates the RSI based on a user-defined source and length. It then determines the highest and lowest RSI values over a specific lookback period to form the channels. This approach helps normalize RSI movements relative to its recent volatility, making it easier to spot when momentum is truly reaching a local peak or trough.
Settings
- RSI Source: Determines the price data used to calculate the RSI (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- RSI Period Length: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation (default is 14).
- Donchian Lookback Period Length: Sets the number of bars used to determine the highest high and lowest low of the RSI values to create the channels.
FAQ
How do I use the RSI Donchian Channels for trend following?
You can look for the RSI to reach the upper or lower bands to confirm strong momentum. A trend is often considered "strong" as long as the RSI remains pinned to the outer envelope.
What do the alerts signify?
The script includes built-in alerts for when the RSI crosses the basis (middle line) or when the RSI first touches the upper or lower Donchian envelopes, providing notification of potential momentum shifts.
