The V-MACD indicator provides a variation of the classical Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) by utilizing volume data instead of price to identify momentum and trend shifts in market activity.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly in identifying shifts in volume momentum which often precede price movements. Traders can use the V-MACD in several ways:

  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram represents the distance between the V-MACD line and the Signal line. Expanding bars suggest increasing volume momentum, while contracting bars suggest waning momentum.
  • Signal Line Crossovers: A crossover of the V-MACD above the Signal line indicates a bullish shift in volume momentum, whereas a crossunder suggests a bearish shift.
  • Zero Line Crossovers: When the V-MACD crosses above the zero line, it signifies that the fast volume average has crossed above the slow volume average, indicating a sustained increase in relative volume.
  • Divergences: Traders can look for discrepancies between price action and the V-MACD to identify potential exhaustion in the current trend.

Details

The V-MACD follows the same mathematical logic as the standard MACD but swaps the traditional price input for volume. This implementation calculates the difference between a fast exponential moving average (EMA) of volume and a slow EMA of volume to produce the V-MACD line. A third EMA, known as the Signal line, is then calculated from the V-MACD line itself. By focusing on volume, the tool highlights the underlying strength or weakness of a move regardless of the price direction, offering a different perspective on market participation.

Settings

  • Fast Length: Determines the period for the shorter volume EMA (default is 12).
  • Slow Length: Determines the period for the longer volume EMA (default is 26).
  • Signal Length: Sets the period for the EMA of the V-MACD line (default is 9).
  • Show Histogram?: Toggles the visibility of the volume momentum histogram.
  • Highlight V-MACD/Signal Crossovers?: When enabled, plots visual markers on the chart when the V-MACD and Signal lines cross.
  • Highlight Zero Line Crossovers?: When enabled, changes the background color based on whether the V-MACD is above or below the zero line.
  • Apply Ribbon Filling?: Enables a colored cloud between the V-MACD and Signal lines for easier trend visualization.

FAQ

How do I interpret the V-MACD histogram colors?

The histogram is color-coded to show both the direction relative to the zero line and the current slope. Bright colors represent increasing momentum (growing bars), while faded colors represent decreasing momentum (shrinking bars).

Can the V-MACD be used for trend confirmation?

Yes, a rising V-MACD often confirms the strength of a price trend, indicating that the move is backed by increasing volume. Conversely, a falling V-MACD during a price rally might suggest a lack of conviction.
