Squeeze Optimization
Jan 17, 2015

The UCS_Squeeze_Optimization indicator provides an advanced momentum and volatility tracking tool designed to identify consolidation phases and potential breakouts. By integrating Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels with optional Heikin Ashi smoothing, it highlights periods of "squeezing" where price volatility is low, signaling an impending expansion in price action.
Usage
The indicator is primarily used to time trend continuations or reversals by monitoring the relationship between volatility bands and momentum.
- Squeeze Identification: Small circles on the zero line change color based on the squeeze state. A red circle indicates a "Squeeze On" state (Bollinger Bands are inside Keltner Channels), suggesting low volatility. A green circle indicates a "Squeeze Off" state, suggesting the market is trending or breaking out.
- Momentum Interpretation: The histogram represents the direction and strength of the trend. When the histogram is above zero and rising (dark green), it indicates strong bullish momentum. When it is above zero but falling (light green), bullish momentum is slowing. Conversely, a histogram below zero indicates bearish momentum, with dark red representing strengthening selling pressure and light red representing weakening pressure.
- Heikin Ashi Optimization: Users can enable Heikin Ashi calculations to filter out market noise, providing a smoother representation of the trend and squeeze triggers.
Details
The script functions by comparing the width of Bollinger Bands (Standard Deviation-based) to Keltner Channels (ATR-based). A squeeze occurs when the Bollinger Bands contract within the Keltner Channels. The momentum component can be toggled between a Bollinger Band Ratio (%B) calculation or a standard Rate of Change (ROC), allowing for flexibility depending on the trader's preference for volatility-adjusted momentum.
Settings
Core Settings
- Squeeze Length: Sets the lookback period for both the Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels (Default: 20).
- BB MultFactor: Adjusts the standard deviation multiplier for the Bollinger Bands.
- KC MultFactor: Adjusts the ATR multiplier for the Keltner Channels.
- Momentum Smoothing: Determines the smoothing period applied to the momentum histogram.
Optimization Toggles
- Use Bollinger Band Ratio Instead of Momentum: When enabled, the histogram uses the %B calculation. When disabled, it uses a 12-period Rate of Change (ROC).
- Heikin Ashi Optimization: When enabled, the indicator uses Heikin Ashi-based price data (ohlc4) and modified ATR for its calculations to reduce noise.
FAQ
How do I interpret the blue circles on the zero line?
Blue circles represent a neutral state where no specific squeeze condition is met, typically occurring when the bands are transitioning between states.
What is the difference between the red and green histogram bars?
Green bars indicate bullish momentum (above zero), while red bars indicate bearish momentum (below zero). Bright colors signify increasing momentum in that direction, while faded colors signify a potential slowdown.
