Volume Profile
Mar 18, 2025

The Volume Profile indicator visualizes the distribution of trading volume across price levels over a user-defined historical period to identify key liquidity zones. This tool helps traders pinpoint the Point of Control (POC), determine the Value Area where most trading activity occurs, and identify significant support and resistance levels based on historical volume concentration.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market structure and liquidity. By plotting volume horizontally, traders can see which price levels have the highest interest from market participants.
- Support and Resistance: High volume nodes often act as strong support or resistance, while low volume nodes may indicate areas where price could move quickly.
- Market Sentiment: By viewing the bullish/bearish volume split, traders can assess whether buyers or sellers are dominant at specific price levels.
- Trend Reversals: The Value Area and POC serve as focal points for price; deviations outside these zones often precede a return to the mean or a breakout.
Details
The script employs several core methodologies to construct the profile:
- Vertical Price Rows: It divides the high-low range of the selected lookback period into equal-height rows based on the user's resolution settings.
- Volume Aggregation: The script calculates volume for each bar and distributes it across the price rows. It can distinguish between bullish volume (close >= open) and bearish volume.
- Value Area Calculation: Starting from the POC (the row with the highest volume), the script expands upward and downward until it encompasses the specified percentage (e.g., 70%) of the total volume.
- Dynamic Layout: Users can shift the profile's horizontal position and width to ensure it does not obstruct the price action on the chart.
Settings
Calculation Settings
- Lookback: The number of recent bars used to calculate the volume distribution.
- Number of Rows: Determines the vertical granularity/resolution of the profile.
- Profile Width: Sets the relative horizontal length of the rows.
- Horizontal Offset: Controls the distance between the current bar and the profile anchor.
- Value Area (%): Defines the cumulative volume threshold (typically 70%) for the Value Area.
- Volume: Toggle between "Up/Down" (split bullish/bearish volume) or "Total" volume display.
- Profile Placement: Aligns the profile to either the "Right" or "Left" side of the chart.
Appearance
- Rows Border Width: Adjusts the thickness of the borders around the volume boxes.
- Gradient Colors: Enables color fading based on the relative volume strength of each row.
- Value Area Up / Down: Customizes the colors for volume within the Value Area.
- Total Volume Color: Sets the color used when the "Total" volume display type is selected.
- POC: Toggles the visibility of the Point of Control line and its width.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Value Area?
The Value Area represents the price range where the majority of trading volume occurred during the lookback period. Prices inside this area are considered "fair value," while prices outside may be overextended.
Why is my profile not showing when I set a high horizontal offset?
Charting platforms typically restrict plotting more than 500 bars into the future. If the offset combined with the profile width exceeds this limit, the profile may be truncated or hidden.
How can I access the Volume Profile indicator?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
