Support and ResistanceVolume BasedLiquidity

The Volume Profile Heatmap indicator provides an advanced market structure visualization that maps historical volume distribution across price levels using a dynamic color gradient system. This tool identifies high-probability support and resistance zones, liquidity clusters, and value areas by highlighting where significant institutional activity has occurred within a specified lookback period.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify key market levels and institutional interest. Traders can use the heatmap to visualize volume concentration as a background overlay, making it easier to spot "thick" zones (high volume) and "thin" zones (low volume).

  • Identifying High-Probability Zones: Price levels with intense color saturation indicate high volume nodes. These areas often act as significant support or resistance when retested.
  • Value Area Breakouts: Moving outside the Value Area High (VAH) or Value Area Low (VAL) with momentum suggests the market is seeking a new fair value, potentially signaling a trend continuation.
  • Mean Reversion: The Point of Control (POC) represents the price level with the highest traded volume. It often acts as a price magnet or a focal point for mean reversion trades.
  • Selective Analysis: By filtering for Bullish or Bearish volume, traders can determine if a high-volume zone was created primarily by buying or selling pressure, providing directional context.

Details

The script utilizes an adaptive volume distribution algorithm to ensure accuracy. When a candle spans multiple price bands, the volume is distributed proportionally across the occupied rows. This prevents large-range candles from distorting the profile at a single price point.

The heatmap is constructed using 24 horizontal bands, which is the maximum resolution possible while maintaining stability within platform plot limits. The calculation engine performs a bidirectional expansion from the Point of Control to determine the Value Area based on the user-defined percentage (typically 68%, representing one standard deviation).

Settings

Calculation Settings

  • Lookback Period: Defines the number of historical bars (10 to 300) used to calculate the volume distribution.
  • Profile Rows: Sets the vertical resolution (up to 24 bands). Higher values provide more price granularity.
  • Value Area Percentage: Determines the percentage of total volume to be included within the Value Area boundaries.
  • Volume Type: Filters the data to include "Both" (total volume), "Bullish" (up candles), or "Bearish" (down candles).

Color Settings

  • High Volume Color: Sets the color and transparency for price levels with the highest volume concentration.
  • Low Volume Color: Sets the color for price levels with minimal trading activity.
  • POC Line Color: The color of the Point of Control reference line.
  • VAH/VAL Lines Color: The color of the Value Area High and Value Area Low boundary lines.
  • Extreme Lines Color: The color of the lines marking the highest and lowest price levels of the lookback period.
  • Show POC/Value Area/Extremes: Toggles to enable or disable the visibility of specific reference lines.

FAQ

How do I interpret the different colors on the heatmap? The color intensity correlates with volume concentration. Intense, darker colors represent high volume nodes (significant activity), while lighter, more transparent colors represent low volume nodes (price gaps or areas of fast movement).

Can I use this for intraday scalping? Yes. For intraday use, it is recommended to set a shorter lookback period (e.g., 50-100 bars) on lower timeframes like the 1-minute or 5-minute chart to capture immediate session liquidity.
